NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Tied for fifth after the opening round, the CSUN men's golf team posted a second round 301 Monday but slipped to seventh at the Big West Championship at San Luis Obispo Country Club. Junior Tim Snyder is the lone Matador in the top 20 through two rounds.
"The bottom line is we just didn't play very well today," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "Chipping and putting gave us problems again today, so our goal for tomorrow is to cut down on our short game mistakes. I'm confident we can put together a good round and pass some teams."
Snyder, who opened with a three-over 73 on Sunday, carded a five-over 75 on Monday and is tied for 17th at eight-over 148. Snyder is seven shots off the lead and just three strokes out of the top five heading into Tuesday's final round.
After finishing three-over on the front nine, Snyder eagled the par five 10th hole to get back to one-over for the day. Bogeys on four of the next five holes dropped the CSUN junior to five-over for the day and eight-over for the championship.
Seniors Michael O'Connor and Steven Molumby are tied for 32nd at 12-over 152 after O'Connor posted a round of 76 on Monday while Molumby came in at 79. Molumby was tied for 11th after an opening round 73 while O'Connor was tied for 27th.
Freshman Joey Varnam had the Matadors' low round Monday at three-over 73. Varnam began each nine in good shape as he was one-over through six holes on the front and one-over after three holes on the back. But a double bogey six at No. 7 dropped the freshman to three-over where he remained after 18 holes.
Senior Aden Louez, who began the day tied for 27th, was even-par through nine holes before struggling over the final nine. Louez was one-over for the day heading to the 14th hole when a triple bogey, double bogey and bogey over the next three holes dropped him to seven-over. The senior is now tied for 35th at 13-over 153.
UC Davis (573) took over the team lead Monday as the Aggies fired a tournament-low round of 285 to take a two-shot lead over UC Irvine (575) and UC Riverside (575). Cal Poly (585) is fourth followed by Long Beach State (587), UC Santa Barbara (590), Cal State Fullerton (596), CSUN (599) and Hawai'i (623).
