NORTHRIDGE, CAÂ -Â The CSUN men's golf team posted a final round 300 to move up to seventh place at the conclusion of the 2015 Big West Championship Tuesday at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Matadors were able to move past Cal State Fullerton in the final round to finish seventh at the conference championship for the second straight season. CSUN's three round total of 899 was its lowest since 2012 when the Matadors posted a team score of 895.
"We accomplished one of our goals which was to pass the team closest to us," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We didn't play great today and unfortunately that's kind of how the year went for us, but seventh is better than eighth."Â
For the first time since 2005, CSUN did not have a player finish in the top 20 as senior Michael O'Connor was the low Matador tying for 24th.
O'Connor had CSUN's best round of the championship Tuesday as he fired a two-over 72 to finish at 14-over 224. O'Connor tallied three birdies in the final round, two coming when the senior finished the front nine two-over.
Senior Steven Molumby carded a final round of four-over 74 to move up four spots from 32nd to 28th at 16-over 226. Tim Snyder, who began the day tied for 17th, posted a final round 11-over 81 to slip into a tie for 33rd at 19-over 229. Senior Aden Louez and freshman Joey Varnam finished tied for 36th at 20-over 230 after each posted a final round of seven-over 77.
"Overall Michael played well, he just didn't putt very well today," added Bracken. "Aden and Steven each birdied their last hole which was a nice way for them to go out and it helped us get past Fullerton."Â
The Matadors will lose O'Connor, Molumby and Louez to graduation but return Snyder and Varnam along with a large portion of the 2014-15 squad next season.
"It's always hard to replace senior leadership but if the pieces fall into place next year we can definitely contend," said Bracken.
