SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.-
CSUN Baseball (26-19, 5-12 Big West) was unable to overcome an early deficit, as the Matadors suffered a 7-1 defeat to Cal Poly (21-22, 9-5 Big West) on Saturday night at Baggett Stadium. Yusuke Akitoshi and Ryan Raslowsky each registered two hits for CSUN with Raslowsky bringing in the only run for CSUN in the contest.
The Matadors dug themselves an early hole in the first inning and were placed in the unfortunate position of playing catch up all game long.
Cal Poly managed to scrape across a three-run first on CSUN starter Jerry Keel. A one-out, bases loaded triple by Brett Barbier to left center field broke a scoreless tie and gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.
CSUN trimmed the deficit to 3-1 by scoring in the third. With two outs and nobody on base, Elias Orona began the rally with a double down the left field line. Raslowsky stepped to the plate next and delivered a single to left field to score Orona.
The single tally in the third would be the only run against Mustang pitching in the contest. Kyle Smith frustrated the Matador bats throughout his eight innings of work. Smith walked three in the game and struck out six en route to earning the victory.
CSUN managed to put a runner on base in eight of nine frames but were only able to capitalize and score in the third inning. The Matadors stranded seven base runners in the contest.
Cal Poly added to its advantage with a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Jordan Ellis drove in two with a two-out single in the fifth and RBI hits from Barbier and Ryan Drobny extended the lead to six runs in the seventh.
Keel went 4.2 innings against Cal Poly, allowing five runs and striking out six batters. The left-hander stranded four base runners through the first four innings but was unable to escape the fifth inning when the Mustangs scored twice.
The Matadors conclude their three-game set with the Mustangs on Sunday afternoon at Baggett Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
