Seniors Morley, Turcios Score Penalty Kicks
En Español
SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- Seniors Trevor Morley and David Turcios successfully converted penalty kick opportunities and senior Adam Hobbs stopped a penalty kick attempt over a five-minute period as the CSUN men's soccer team (3-3-1) defeated Santa Clara 2-0 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match. Morley scored at 65:02, Hobbs stopped the Broncos' Dylan Autran at 69:18 and Turcios scored at 69:47 as the Matadors defeated the Broncos to even their season record at 3-3-1.
"We played grinding defense throughout the contest. It was a very hot day and we had to work hard," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "Hobbs' save on the penalty was the turning point of the match. Any time you are on the road and stop a penalty kick, it really uplifts the team and gives them confidence going forward."
The first half was a defensive stalemate where the teams combined for five shots and three fouls with most of the action in midfield. Hobbs did make two stops and Carlos Gonzalez had a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
The second half looked to be headed in the same direction as the first until a five-minute sequence that saw three penalty kicks called. As on Friday, the first Matadors penalty kick started off the work of sophomore Jeremy Degraffenreidt. He tracked down a ball deep down the right side of the pitch and lifted a pass to the top of the 18-yard box. On the ensuing play, the Matadors were fouled and Morley converted his second penalty kick of the weekend. The goal was also the second of his career.
Just over four minutes later, Santa Clara looked to have found redemption on a CSUN foul in the penalty area. Autran blasted a low shot to his right, but Hobbs parried the ball back into the play. Traun jumped on the rebound but an encroaching Hobbs forced him to blast the rebound off the crossbar.
Twenty-nine seconds later, a Santa Clara foul in its area gave CSUN its second penalty kick of the match. Turcios calmly deposited the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season and fourth of his career.
Hobbs finished with four saves to post his first shutout victory of the season and second overall. He now has 156 saves for his career, the seventh-most in school history. Hobbs also now has 11 career shutouts and has passed Joe Barton for the fourth-most in program history.
In front of Hobbs, the CSUN defense did a good job limiting the Broncos' attack. Santa Clara finished with eight shots in the match and CSUN has allowed just one goal in the run of play over its last 412 minutes of action. Shane Steffes and Stuart Close each saw the yellow card for CSUN.
CSUN improved to 4-3-0 in the all-time series with Saint Mary's. The Matadors are now 7-5 against West Coast Conference opponents since the start of the 2009 season and own a 21-10 goal differential in those contests. The win was also the 27th road or neutral victory for the Matadors since the start of the 2010 season.
The Matadors continue their run of West Coast Conference opponents with a road match at San Diego on Friday, Sept. 25 Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. and the match will follow a CSUN-USD women's fixture at 5 p.m.
