Carlos Gonzalez Heads Home Game-Winning Strike
En Español
SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (4-3-1) defeated San Diego 1-0 Friday evening in a non-conference contest at Torero Stadium. Carlos Gonzalez headed home the game-winning goal off a cross from Jumoke Hutton in the 66th minute and Adam Hobbs stopped a penalty kick in the 86th minute to lift CSUN to the 1-0 victory.
For the second-straight game, Hobbs came up huge in stonewalling a penalty kick attempt. After a foul in the box, Marvin Schmiege drilled a low shot to Hobbs' right, which the senior goalkeeper was able to stop. He then pounced on the rebound before Schmiege could get to it. Hobbs also stopped a penalty kick that would have tied the match in a win at Santa Clara on Sept. 20.
"We have three road wins against WCC teams so that is great. Carlos scored a beautiful goal and the build-up on the play was fantastic," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "Hobbs read the penalty kick well and exploded to the ball. He came through again for us and it was a good win on the road. San Diego is an excellent team."
Hobbs finished with six saves in the contest, raising his career total to 162 and moving him into fifth in program history. The shutout was the 12th of his career and the victory is his 25th as a Matador.
After a scoreless first half, CSUN jumped ahead on Gonzalez's team-leading fourth goal of the year. The Big West Conference's Offensive Player of the Week headed home a cross from Jumoke Hutton in the 66th minute to break the tie. Gonzalez also leads the squad with eight points while the assist was the first of Hutton's career.
USD finished with 13 shots to eight for CSUN. The Matadors put four on frame and Steven Manios led the squad with four shots on the evening. The teams combined for 25 fouls and Hutton and Hobbs both saw the yellow card.
CSUN posted its third-straight victory over a West Coast Conference opponent, improving to 8-5 with a 22-10 goal differential against WCC opponents since the start of the 2009 season. The Matadors have allowed just one goal in the run of play over their last 502 minutes of action.
CSUN now sets its sights on Big West Conference play, which begins next week with a pair of matches at Matador Soccer Field. On Thursday, Oct. 1, the Matadors will host the Cal Poly Mustangs at 7 p.m. Two days later, CSUN hosts UC Santa Barbara for a 5 p.m. fixture.
