NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (7-5) fell in double overtime, 2-1, to No. 15 Texas Tech (7-1-3) in its final non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon from Matador Soccer Field. Lindsay Kutscher broke a scoreless tie in the 67th minute by kicking in her second goal of the season, but the Red Raiders would hit two goals including the winning score four minutes into the second overtime to pull out the victory.
"I thought our team played very well today," said head coach Keith West. "We had our chances, they had their chances but it was a very entertaining game. Yes, we are on the losing side of things but I couldn't be more proud of our play today."
The Matadors and Red Raiders fought back and forth in a tight contest on Sunday. CSUN outshot Texas Tech 20-17 while the Red Raiders recorded an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. The Matadors posted four shots on goal to Texas Tech's three, as Kendall Moskal, Kiley Norkus, Sylvia Trinh and Kutscher recorded one apiece in the game.
In the first half, each team fought to a standstill. CSUN recorded six of the first seven shots of the contest in the early minutes. Cynthia Tafoya made two saves in the first half including getting a hand on a shot off the foot of Hannah Devine that hit the cross bar.
After intermission, the Matadors tallied their first shots on goal of the match in the early stages of the period. Trinh fired a shot from the top of the box that was stopped in the 51st minute and Norkus had her shot saved off a breakaway opportunity six minutes later.
Finally at 66:28, Kutscher found the net to put the Matadors on top. Inside the right of the box, Kutscher shot at the goal, hitting the post but the freshman would rebound the loose ball and fire a second attempt just out of the reach of Texas Tech goalkeeper Lauren Watson to place CSUN ahead 1-0.
The lead would be short-lived however, as the Red Raiders answered back three minutes later to square the game at 1-1 off a score from Janine Beckie.
The CSUN defense kept the Red Raiders off the scoreboard for the remainder of regulation, holding the opposition to a pair of shots over the final 20 minutes
The Matadors outshot Texas Tech in the first overtime 3-2 but were unable to hit the deciding goal. Moskal had an opportunity at the net late in the period, but her shot from the left side of the box was stopped clean by Watson.
In the second overtime, the Red Raiders would hit the winning goal from nearly outside the top of the box. Carly Wickenheiser's shot looped into the net just out of the reach of a moving Tafoya to give Texas Tech the victory.
Sunday marked the first time this season the Matadors lost after scoring first in a match. CSUN had won 10 straight matches after scoring first, a streak that dates back to September 2014 where Missouri came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat CSUN 3-1.
The Matadors now turn their attention to conference play beginning next Sunday. CSUN travels to UC Davis for the start of an eight-game conference slate. Kickoff between the Matadors and Aggies is slated for 1 p.m.
