CSUN To Broadcast Men’s Soccer Games In Spanish

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- CSUN Athletics today announced that through the newly-created CSUN Deportes, the Matadors will broadcast men's soccer games in Spanish. CSUN alumni Eduard Cauich, an experienced MLS broadcaster and the current Sports Editor at Hoy Los Ángeles, and Jose Ávalos, a veteran radio and TV personality who can be seen on EstrellaTV's national newscast, will call five games for the Matadors this season. Cauich and Ávalos first called CSUN men's soccer games in Spanish together while they were students.
"Reaching the Spanish-speaking demographic is critical to the rise of the Matadors and it is essential that we have a presence in Spanish in LA's soccer community," said CSUN Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Brandon Martin. "Having Eduard and Jose on board gives CSUN Deportes instant credibility and I'm thrilled to have two former Matadors back in the fold."
Cauich and Ávalos will call their first game on Friday, September 11 as the Matadors take on the University of New Mexico at 7:00 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field. The broadcast, which will be accompanied by a live video production, will air for free on www.gomatadors.com and through BigWest.TV.
Cauich has spent the past four years at Hoy, and before that was the Communications Senior Manager for Club Deportivo Chivas USA. He also called play-by-play for Chivas USA's website broadcasts during the 2012 season and has worked for MLSNet.com, La Opinion, Azteca America, the Ventura County Star and Univision. He graduated from CSUN with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism in 2000.
"Having the opportunity to broadcast games for CSUN, my alma mater, is a great way to give back to the university that gave me the training and skills to become the professional I am today," said Cauich. "CSUN has an excellent journalism program and to return to my school and contribute to CSUN Deportes, along with my colleague and friend José Avalos, will be a memorable experience."
Ávalos has worked as a reporter at EstrellaTV Noticias 62 since 2012 and before that spent 10 years working in radio. He was the host of "Enterate mi Gente" on Radio Formula 950 in Los Angeles from 2008-2010. Ávalos graduated from CSUN in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and, along with Cauich, helped launch CSUN's Valley View News newscast in Spanish. Ávalos also teaches Spanish for the LA Unified School District.
"For the San Fernando Valley community and for all those who speak Spanish and love soccer, this is an opportunity that they will love without a doubt," said Ávalos. "It's going to bring out more young people and it's going to give them hope that one day they can be at CSUN. It's very emotional to be able to return with everything this university has. To do this now is big, it's exciting and grand."
This summer, CSUN Athletics announced the creation of CSUN Deportes Spanish-language video content and the new Spanish-language Twitter and Instagram handles, @VamosCSUN. Cauich and Ávalos will also contribute to and advise on this new content and its strategy.
"Spanish is a beautiful language and our community has a lot of Mexicans, Latinos, South Americans and Spaniards. For them to have their language spoken and expressed in a sport they have passion for, is something we should give them," said CSUN Men's Soccer Head Coach Terry Davila. "I'm proud that our games will be broadcast in Spanish."

Los graduados de CSUN y experimentados periodistas Eduard y Jose Ávalos regresan para transmitir juntos los partidos de los Matadores 15 años después

El Departamento de Atletismo de CSUN anunció hoy que por medio de la cadena recién creada CSUN Deportes, los Matadores transmitirán juegos del equipo masculino de fútbol en español. El graduado de CSUN, Eduard Cauich, un periodista con experiencia en transmisiones en Major League Soccer y ahora editor de deportes de Hoy Los Ángeles, así como José Ávalos, un experimentado periodista de radio y televisión, que puede ser visto por el noticiero nacional de Estrella TV, estarán transmitiendo cinco partidos de la temporada de los Matadores este año. Cauich y Ávalos narraron partidos de CSUN en español juntos cuando ambos eran estudiantes en CSUN.
"El alcanzar a la demografía de habla hispana es importante para poder incrementar la audiencia de los Matadores y es esencial para tener presencia en español en la comunidad hispana", dijo el director de Atletismo Intercolegial, Dr. Brandon Martin. "El tener a Eduard y José con nosotros le da a CSUN Deportes credibilidad instantánea y estamos muy emocionados de tener a dos exMatadores con nosotros."
Cauich y Ávalos narrarán su primer partido el 11 de septiembre cuando los Matadores enfrenten a la Universidad de Nuevo México a las 7:00 p.m. en Matador Soccer Field. La transmisión, la cual será acompañada por una producción de video en vivo, será transmitida gratis en www.gomatadors.com y por medio de BigWest TV.
Cauich ha trabajado por los últimos cuatro años en Hoy Los Ángeles y anteriormente fue Gerente de Comunicaciones de Club Deportivo Chivas USA, de la MLS. También narró partidos para el sitio de Chivas USA durante la temporada 2012 y ha trabajado para MLSNet.com, La Opinión, Azteca América, Ventura County Star y Univision en Nuevo México. Se graduó de CSUN con un bachillerato de Periodismo en 2000.
"El tener la oportunidad de transmitir partidos para CSUN, mi exescuela, es una gran manera de regresarle algo a esta universidad que me dio el entrenamiento y las habilidades para convertirme en el profesional que soy ahora, " dijo Cauich. "CSUN tiene un programa de periodismo excelente y el regresar para contribuir a CSUN Deportes junto con mi colega y amigo José Ávalos será una experiencia memorable."
Ávalos ha trabajado con Noticias 62 de Estrella TV desde 2012 y ha sido locutor por los últimos 10 años en la radio. Fue el conductor de "Entérate mi Gente" por Radio Fórmula 950 AM en Los Angeles de 2008 a 2010. Ávalos se graduó de CSUN en 2000 con un bachillerato en Periodismo. Junto a Cauich, ayudaron a lanzar el noticiero en español Valley View en Español de la universidad. Ávalos también enseña español en el Distrito Unificado Escolar de Los Ángeles.
"Para la comunidad del valle de San Fernando y para todos aquellos que hablan español y que les encanta el futbol, esta es una oportunidad que sin duda la van a disfrutar," dijo Ávalos. "Va a ser algo que va a traer más jóvenes y les va a dar una ilusión de algún día venir a CSUN. Es algo muy emocionante poder volver a transmitir partidos ahora con todo lo que tiene la universidad. Él hacer esto es algo grande para nosotros, es muy emocionante."
