Senior Patrick Hickman Heads Home Game-Winning Goal in 82nd Minute
En Español
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (5-4-1, 2-0-0 Big West) defeated Sacramento State 1-0 in a Big West Conference match Saturday night at Matador Soccer Field. Senior Patrick Hickman headed home a Gabe Robinson throw-in in the 82nd minute and Kevin Marquez made several important stops as the Matadors posted their first home victory over the Hornets since 2008.Â
With the teams stalemated in the closing minutes of regulation, CSUN won a throw-in down the right flank of the attack. Robinson delivered a deep throw into the penalty area where Hickman got a head on it and pushed it off the post and in for his first goal of the season. The goal was the third of Hickman's career and his first strike since his sophomore season.Â
Sacramento State pushed hard for an equalizer over the closing moments, but the CSUN defense stood strong to post its first shutout of the season. In net, Marquez finished with four saves to earn his first career clean sheet. In the 61st minute, Marquez deftly handled a blast from Nate Nugen, punching the ball off the crossbar and out of play to stem the attack.Â
Offensively, CSUN finished with a 12-11 advantage in shots and both teams produced three corner kicks. Both squads were whistled for 12 fouls and Shane Steffes and Bar Shem Tov both saw the yellow card for the Matadors.Â
In the first half, neither team was able to produce much. Nicholas Grinde had a shot saved off the line by the Sacramento State defense and Shem Tov had a header that flashed past the near post in CSUN's best attempts of the opening 45 minutes.Â
With six points in two matches, the Matadors already have more points against the Big West North Division than they had all of last year. CSUN hits the road for its next two contests, traveling to Cal Poly (Oct. 6) and UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 8) for Big West Conference matches.Â
