Senior Patrick Hickman Scores Game-Tying Goal in 74th Minute
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ---The CSUN men's soccer team (5-4-2, 2-0-1 Big West) rallied for a 1-1 draw at Cal Poly Thursday night in a Big West Conference match at Mustang Stadium. Senior Patrick Hickman scored for the second-straight game and fellow senior Kevin Marquez stood tall in net with seven saves as the Matadors earned a crucial road point in the Big West standings.Â
Trailing 1-0 after a goal from Justin Dhillon in the 38th minute, CSUN broke through to tie the match off a scrum in front of goal. Juan Fernando Samayoa lofted a free kick into the 18-yard box and the ball caromed off a few feet before Hickman poked it into the side netting past a diving Mustang goalkeeper.
The goal was Hickman's second of the year after he headed home the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State on Oct. 1. Samayoa recorded his third assist of the year on the play and now leads the Matadors with 11 points.Â
In net, Marquez held firm and matched a career high with his seven saves. He had two stops in the first half, four in the second and one in the first overtime to raise his season total to 54 saves. His stop in the first overtime on Cal Poly's Kaba Alkebulan was from point-blank range and he and the CSUN defense fended off 18 shots from the Mustangs over the 110 minutes.Â
In the first half, both teams hit the post within 100 seconds of each other. In the 15th minute, Edwin Quiroz broke through the Mustang defense but his shot was kept out by the woodwork while Cal Poly's George Grote was denied by the post in the 16th minute.Â
In the second half, Marquez made three saves over the first 20 minutes to help set the stage for Hickman's goal. After the match was tied, Samayoa fired off a free kick that required a save from the Cal Poly goalkeeper.Â
In the second overtime, Dre Deas had two solid chances to send CSUN home with all three points. He had a shot saved off his left foot and then drew a foul from a Mustang defender that resulted in his second yellow card and subsequent dismissal from the match.Â
CSUN finished with six shots and three corner kicks in the match and the Matadors were whistled for 19 fouls but did not receive any cautions. The Matadors are 3-0-2 over their last five matches and earned their first point in San Luis Obispo since 2012.Â
The Matadors wrap-up their tour of the California central coast with a match at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff between the Matadors and Gauchos is set for 7 p.m. from Harder Stadium.Â
