NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (5-5-3, 2-1-2 Big West) earned a 1-1 draw with Cal State Fullerton Wednesday night in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. Trailing 1-0 and down to 10 men, the Matadors scratched back into the contest behind a goal from Bar Shem Tov in the 79th minute and then saw goalkeeper Kevin Marquez make several key saves to preserve the point.Â
The Matadors and Titans went to halftime scoreless to set up a dramatic second half. In the 63rd minute, Alex Heilmann opened the scoring by finishing off a cross from Rei Dorwart. About three minutes later, CSUN went down to 10 men as Papi Diouf saw a red card for a tackle.Â
Despite the numerical disadvantage, CSUN tied the match in the 79th minute on Shem Tov's second goal of the season. A turnover by the Titans gave the ball to Juan Fernando Samayoa and he connected with Shem Tov, who fired home a left-footed shot past the Titan goalkeeper.Â
In net, Marquez finished with a career-high nine saves to help CSUN keep a perfect record at home (3-0-2) in the 2016 season. In the 69th minute, Marquez made a pair of outstanding stops to keep CSUN within one goal. He also got some help from the woodwork as Cal State Fullerton put a pair of shots off the crossbar.Â
CSUN played stellar defense all night and fended off 26 shots and 11 corner kicks, both of which represent new opponent season highs, from the Titans. Andrew Rizeq, Patrick Hickman and Samayoa all played 110 minutes in the field.Â
The Matadors finished with eight shots and four corner kicks in the draw. The Matadors were whistled for 17 fouls and Samuel Dadzie, Shane Steffes and Shem Tov all saw yellow cards. The Titans committed seven fouls and saw three yellow cards.Â
With eight points, CSUN remains in second place in the Big West South Division. After Wednesday's results, UC Riverside has 13 points, Cal State Fullerton has four and UC Irvine has three. Â The Matadors travel to UC Irvine for its next contest, a 7 p.m. kickoff from Anteater Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 15.Â
