En Español
IRVINE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (5-6-3, 2-2-2 Big West Conference) lost 4-3 to UC Irvine Saturday night in a Big West Conference game at Anteater Stadium. Bar Shem Tov, Juan Fernando Samayoa and Dre Deas all scored for the Matadors, but the Anteaters answered with four goals of their own to hand CSUN its first defeat when scoring at least two goals since the 2013 season.Â
Saturday's contest was a wild affair that saw two goals and two team saves in the first 10 minutes. Shem Tov opened the scoring with a goal in the sixth minute, finishing off a cross from Jumoke Hutton for his second goal of the week and third of the season. Less than minutes later, UC Irvine tied the match through Ivan Canales.Â
In the 27th minute, a foul in the box gave Samayoa a penalty kick and the senior converted for his fifth goal of the season. The 2-1 advantage was short lived however as UC Irvine tied the match through Canales again just over two minutes laterl. The Anteaters then took a 3-2 lead into halftime with a goal in the 42nd minute as Thomas Janjigian found the netting.Â
In the second half, the tension escalated and CSUN broke through for an equalizer in the 60th minute. Deas collected a feed from Edwin Quiroz and scored the first goal of his Matador career. The assist was the first of Quiroz's career as well.Â
However, the Anteaters struck for the game-winning goal in the 70th minute as Jose Ortiz broke the deadlock. The Matadors pressed for a fourth goal, but Shem Tov, Stuart Close and Deas all had their shots on frame saved by the UCI goalkeeper.Â
The Matadors had to play the last 15 minutes with 10 men as Hutton saw a red card. Samuel Dadzie, Patrick Hickman and Samayoa all saw yellow cards for the Matadors, who committed 13 fouls on the evening. UC Irvine finished with 11 fouls and two yellow cards.Â
Kevin Marquez took the loss in net for CSUN and made four saves over the 90 minutes. All four stops came in the second half and UC Irvine fired off a total of 23 shots in the contest. The Matadors finished with 13 shots and Deas led the squad with three.Â
The loss was CSUN's first when scoring at least two goals since a 4-2 defeat to UCLA on Sept. 22, 2013.Â
The Matadors return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 with a road contest at UC Riverside. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and CSUN returns to Matador Soccer Field on Saturday, Oct. 22 to host UC Irvine in a 7 p.m. match.Â
