NORTHRIDGE, CA - An opening round 287 has the CSUN men's golf team tied for sixth place after the first round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational Thursday at Stockton Golf and Country Club.
The Matadors are tied with two other teams at three-over 287, CSUN's low 18-hole total of the season on the par-71 layout. Sacramento State holds the team lead at six-under 278 while BYU's Brett Rasmussen and Sac State's Aaron Beverly share the individual lead at four-under 67.
"We played fine but again wasted some shots," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "Some of the guys were frustrated with their putting but overall I thought we played pretty well. We're only three shots out of third so the team is feeling positive heading into round two tomorrow."
Thursday's opening round was played in on and off rain but Bracken said that was no excuse.Â
"We're not used to playing in the rain but every team faced the same conditions, it didn't affect us all that much."
Senior Tavit Garabedian was CSUN's low scorer after round one for the second straight tournament as he posted three birdies, 14 pars and a single bogey on his way to a two-under 69. Garabedian is currently tied for sixth as he bids for his first top 10 finish of the season.
"Tavit played well and has come good confidence going right now," added Bracken.
Sam Engel and Felix Mory are tied for 23rd after each finished at one-over 72. Engel was two-over after just three holes but an eagle on No. 16 and a birdie at No. 17 got him to one-under. Three bogeys and a birdie over his final 10 holes left him at one-over for the round. Mory had a single birdie along with 16 pars and two bogeys for his one-over 72.
Tomas Skajem was poised to add another 72 to the board before a double bogey six on his final hole dropped him to three-over 74. Also for CSUN, Michael Zhang, competing as an individual, is tied for 47th at at four-over 75, Trym Falch is tied for 55th at at five-over 76 and Sevian Frangipane, also an individual, is 76th at 10-over 81.
CSUN will be paired with Temple and Denver for round two beginning at 8:54 a.m.
