NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN golf team opened the 2016-17 season Monday at the Nick Watney Invitational at San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, CA.
The Matadors opened with a team round of 306 before cutting 14 strokes off the total in round two's 292. CSUN is 11th out of 15 teams heading into Tuesday's final round.
"Obviously I wasn't thrilled with our first round, we're a much better team than that," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "The second round was more of what I expect from the guys and even then I expect them to play better. We compounded some errors with some mental mistakes, if we eliminate that tomorrow we'll be fine."
Junior Felix Mory is poised for his first top 20 finish of the season as he is tied for 16th at three-over 145. Mory was tied for 57th after an opening round 77 but rebounded to shoot a two-under 69 in the afternoon round.
"Felix didn't have much go right in the first round but he's too good of a player and he showed it in the second round," added Bracken.
Senior Sam Engel is currently tied for 39th after bouncing back from an opening round 76 to card a second round one-over 72. Engel is at six-over 148 through 36 holes. Also scoring for the Matadors were Tomas Skajem who is tied for 62nd at 10-over 152 following rounds of 78-74, Michael Zhang who is tied for 71st at 12-over 154 after posting consecutive rounds of 77 and Tavit Garabedian who is tied for 76th at 13-over 155 following rounds of 77-78.
Junior Trym Falch made his CSUN debut Monday as an individual and is currently tied for 67th at 11-over 153 (78-75).
Saint Mary's and BYU share the team lead at 572 through 36 holes while three players share the individual lead at three-under 139.
The Matadors will tee off the final round off the 10th hole beginning at 9:20 a.m.
