Junior Felix Mory picked up where he left off last season, picking up another top 20 finish. Mory, who opened the day in a tie for 16th, finished in the same position after a final round even-par 71. The second-year Matador, who carded rounds of 76-69 on Monday, was two-under through nine holes which included an eagle three on the par five 18th.Â
But a double bogey seven at No. 3 dropped him back to even par for the day and three-over for the tournament.
"Felix was a little up and down today, he hit some great shots but also had some bad shots," said head coach Jim Bracken. "The guys are confident that we're better than we showed at this tournament."
The rest of the CSUN starting five was well back in the pack as sophomore Tomas Skajem finished in a tie for 45th at 10-over 223. Skajem opened with rounds of 78-74 on Monday before closing with an even-par 71 Tuesday, his low round as a Matador. The sophomore was one-under through 14 holes before a bogey on the sixth hole dropped him to even-par for the round.
Senior Sam Engel dropped from 39th into a tie for 48th at 11-over 224 after a final round 76. Junior Trym Falch, competing as an individual, finished up his first tournament tied for 63rd at 14-over 227 (78-75-74). Freshman Michael Zhang, playing his first collegiate tournament, also tied for 63rd with rounds of 77-77-73 while senior Tavit Garabedian tied for 78th at 19-over 232 (77-78-77).
As a team, CSUN finished with rounds of 305-292-291 to finish tied with Pacific at 889. BYU (853) won the team title by two shots over Nevada (855) while Perry Cohen of St. Mary's took home individual medalist honors at five-under 208.
"A positive was that we improved each round and some of the new guys got a tournament under their belt," added Bracken. "We wasted a lot of shots but I know we're going to get better. At least we got our worst round of the year out of the way early."
The Matadors will be back in action Oct. 17-18 as CSUN hosts the annual Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley.
