Edwin Quiroz Scores First Career Goal for CSUN
En Español
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (5-4-2, 2-1-1- Big West) lost 2-1 to UC Santa Barbara Saturday night in a Big West Conference game at Harder Stadium. Edwin Quiroz brought CSUN back to within 2-1 moments before halftime, but the Matadors could not find the equalizer as they wrapped up play against the Big West North Division.Â
Early in the contest, a play away from the ball played into the first goal of the match. Ahinga Selemani fouled Patrick Hickman and forced the senior to have to leave the match due to blood. Selemani saw the yellow card, but exactly one minute later, the Gauchos took advantage of a turnover in the 18-yard box and Noah Billingsley found Dalton Pando at the back post to put UCSB up 1-0.Â
Hickman would return, but the Gauchos would double their lead through Selemani in the 20th minute. The forward took a long pass that split the CSUN defense, dribbled around Matador goalkeeper Kevin Marquez and scored his fourth goal of the season.Â
With about 10 minutes left in the half, CSUN took advantage of a UCSB turnover to cut the lead in half. Pressure up the left side of the attack forced a turnover and Quiroz sent a low shot inside the right post and past a diving UCSB goalkeeper. The goal was the first of his CSUN career and came in the 36th minute.Â
Marquez continued to keep CSUN in the match after the two early goals and finished the contest with six saves. Through 12 matches, Marquez owns a 1.26 goals-against-average, 60 saves and a .789 save percentage in over 1,134 minutes in net.Â
The Gauchos finished with a 16-5 advantage in shots for the game although CSUN held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Matadors were whistled for 12 fouls and Trevon Deminson, Juan Fernando Samayoa, Dre Deas and the CSUN bench all saw the yellow card.Â
The Matadors return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 when they host the Cal State Fullerton Titans for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN then plays at UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.Â
