NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- As part of their community service throughout the San Fernando Valley, the CSUN women's tennis teamed up with the ACEing Autism to teach the game to a group of autistic children.Â
Â
Richard Spurling and Dr. Shafali Jeste founded ACEing Autism in Massachusetts in 2008 in hopes of enhancing the lives of children and families with autism through tennis. Dr. Jeste was then recruited to the UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment, a leader in autism studies for decades. The pair relocated to Los Angeles and quickly spread their program throughout the country, creating sites in New York, Fort Lauderdale, Dallas, Pittsburgh, San Diego, New Orleans, Nashville and Indianapolis.Â
Â
For CSUN head coach Gary Victor, the work with ACEing Autism was deeply rewarding for the Matadors.Â
Â
"We are blessed to have the ability to make an impact in young people's lives. Children with autism face a long road, but hopefully our work with them on the tennis court can bring them happiness and introduce them to a sport they can play throughout their lifetime," Victor said.Â
Â
The Matadors and Victor start their 2017 season with a six-match roadtrip that begins with a match at Loyola Marymount on Thursday, Jan. 26. The trip also includes Big West matches at UC Riverside and Long Beach State and includes three contests in Honolulu (Hawai'i-Pacific, San Diego and Hawai'i). Â
CSUN's 2017 home opener is on Saturday, Feb. 25 against San Jose State with first serve slated for 10 a.m. The month of March will feature home contest with Cal State LA, New Mexico, South Dakota State, Marquette, Texas State and Princeton all matches are free and open to the public.
