NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Seniors Patrick Hickman and Juan Fernando Samayoa both earned a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Far West Region team after a successful 2016 season that saw the CSUN men's soccer program win the Big West South Division and the Big West Tournament Championship. A central defender and the 2016 Big West Defensive Player of the Year, received a spot on the second team while Fernando, a First Team All-Big West midfielder, was named to the third team.Â
Originally from Columbia, SC, Hickman had a sensation senior season for CSUN in 2016. He scored a career-high three goals during the season, collecting the game-winning goal against Sacramento State and added goals against UC Irvine and Cal Poly. He also scored the game-winning penalty kick in the Matadors' victory over the Hornets in the Big West Tournament Semifinals. Â
"I am really proud to be recognized by the NSCAA and thankful for my teammates and coaches for making it possible," said Hickman. "As a senior, I am so proud of our achievements as a team this season and I am glad that I can represent the program because it has given me so much over the past four years."Â
In addition to his First Team All-Big West honors this year, Hickman earned Honorable Mention honors as a junior and sophomore. Hickman anchored a CSUN backline that finished with a sterling record at home (6-1-3) during the 2016 season. The Matadors produced three clean sheets, all of which came against Big West opposition and Hickman is the third Matadors since 2012 to claim the top defensive honor among Big West players (Joe Franco, 2012; Trevor Morley, 2015).Â
Samayoa was the offensive leader for the Matadors in 2016, pacing CSUN with six goals, six assists and 18 points. He has connected on five penalty kicks on the season, including a pair from the spot in a win over UC Davis. He also scored a penalty kick goal in draws with CSUB and San Diego and in a 4-3 loss to UC Irvine. His sixth goal came off a free kick to cement a 3-1 CSUN victory over UC Irvine to clinch a berth in the Big West Tournament.Â
"I am super honored and excited to be named to the NSCAA Third Team All-Far West Region team," said Samayoa. "I want to thank my coaches and teammates for helping to make my senior year a memorable one for so many reasons."Â
For his career, Samayoa amassed seven goals and 12 assists. He recorded a pair of assists in a 3-1 victory over UCI, finishing the night with four points. He recorded the game-tying assist in draws with Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton and Samayoa recorded the primary assist on Papi Diouf's goal eight seconds into the 2-1 season-opening victory over Tulsa, the second-fastest goal in NCAA Division I history.Â
The Matadors finished the year 9-7-5 overall and head coach Terry Davila earned his record sixth Big West Conference Coach of the Year award after the season.Â
