NORTHRIDGE, CA - Despite posting a nine shot improvement from roud one to round two, the CSUN men's golf team slipped one spot to 20th after two rounds of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club in Palm Desert.
With a first round 310, the Matadors sat tied with Southern Utah but a second round 301 dropped CSUN into 20th by a single stroke. Despite sitting 20th, the Matadors are just six shots of a top 15 finish heading into Sunday's final round.
"We played better today, the conditions were perfect but we still threw lot of shots away," said head coach Jim Bracken. "We moved up after nine holes so I know we can do it, we just need to put together a good final round tomorrow."
Junior Felix Mory fired an even-par round of 72 on Saturday to move up 37 spots from 75th into a tie for 38th. Mory, who opened the tournament with a six-over 78 on Friday, fired three birdies on the back nine to overcome a pair of bogeys on the front nine. At six-over 150 for the tournament, Mory is 11 shots off the pace heading into the final round.
Senior Tim Snyder, who was 29th after an opening round 74, slipped into a tie for 50th following a five-over 77. Snyder is currently at seven-over 161 with 18 holes remaining.
Elswhere, Sam Engel is tied for 64th after posting a three-shot improvement from round one to round two. Engel carded a three-over 75 on Saturday and is at nine-over 153. Tavit Garabedian bounced back from an opening round 80 to post a second round 77 and sits in a tie for 90th at 13-over 157. Luis Calderon is 111th at 20-over 164 after consecutive rounds of 82 and Conrad White is 116th at 25-over 169 competing as an individual.
The third and final round gets underway Sunday morning beginning at 7:50 a.m.
