Senior Jasmine Johnson Scores Career-High 20 Points
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (6-20, 4-7 Big West) lost 77-66 to Cal Poly Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference contest at The Matadome broadcast on ESPN3. Senior Jasmine Johnson scored a career-high 20 points and sophomore Vanessa Garner added 14, but an early deficit forced CSUN to play uphill almost the entire game and they lost at home to the Mustangs for the first time since 2010.Â
The game got away from CSUN in the first period. After Johnson scored the first six CSUN points and the Matadors led 6-2, the Mustangs went on a 20-2 run to take a 22-8 lead with 1:52 left in the frame. Cal Poly eventually led 27-15 at the end of the first period and trailed 33-15 moments into the second.Â
The Matadors closed the half on a slight run and trailed 46-36 at halftime. Johnson had 12 at halftime as both teams shot over 50 percent from the field in the first half.Â
In the second half, Cal Poly stretched its lead to 20 at two points in the third period before a 6-0 burst gave the Mustangs a 64-50 lead after 30 minutes. In the fourth, the lead got back up to 19 before the Matadors scored the final eight points of the game.Â
Johnson was 6-of-8 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line, setting a new career high for makes at the charity stripe. She added three rebounds and two blocks in 31 minutes of action. Saturday's performance marked the third time this season Johnson set a new career high in points.Â
Garner, who returned to the court at UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 18, scored a season-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. She added four rebounds and a steal in 26 minutes off the bench.Â
Serafina Maulupe added seven points and Channon Fluker saw her eight-game double-double streak end with a six-point, five-rebound performance.Â
CSUN shot 42.1 percent from the field compared to an even 50 percent for Cal Poly. The Mustangs held a 37-32 advantage in rebounds and scored 16 points off 11 Matador turnovers. All nine Matadors who played had points in the game and the CSUN bench finished with a 26-2 advantage over its Cal Poly counterparts.Â
The Matadors return to action with a home game against UC Riverside on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.Â
