Channon Fluker Leads CSUN with 17 Points and 14 Rebounds
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (6-21, 4-9 BWC) lost 84-62 Wednesday night in a Big West Conference game at The Matadome. Freshman Channon Fluker led the Matadors with 17 points and 14 rebounds, her ninth double-double in the last 10 games, but the Matadors suffered slow starts at the beginning of each half that allowed the Highlanders to run away with the victory.Â
In addition to the slow starts, turnovers really hampered the Matadors' upset bid of the undefeated Highlanders. CSUN turned the ball over 26 times Wednesday night, resulting in 33 points for UCR. Conversely, the Highlanders had just five turnovers and posted  22 steals and 25 assists.Â
In the first period, UCR jumped out to a 9-1 lead before Claudia Ramos buried a 3-pointer. The Highlanders went on to win the opening period 25-14, shooting 57.1 percent from the field. The Matadors fought back in the second period and closed the gap to 38-31 following a lay-up from Tessa Boagni with a little less than five minutes left in the half. From there, UC Riverside closed on a 10-6 run to take a 48-37 lead in to halftime.Â
In the second half, the Highlanders came out of the gates quickly. UCR opened the half on a 13-4 run and built a lead as large as 25 by the end of the third period. In the fourth, CSUN won the period 15-12, but the deficit proved too steep to overcome.Â
Fluker finished 8-of-11 from the field and added two blocks in 31 minutes of action. Boagni finished with 13 points and six rebounds off the bench in 25 minutes. Serafina Maulupe added 11 points and three assists while Cheyenne Allen dished out a career-high eight assists.Â
The Matadors finished the game shooting 48.1 percent from the field compared to 49.3 percent for UC Riverside. The Matadors won the rebounding battle 39-25 and had 40 points in the paint.Â
CSUN returns to action Saturday, Feb. 27 wth a Big West Conference game at UC Davis. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.Â
