Matadors Drop Two on Day One of UCI Invite

NORTHRIDGE, CA---
No. 25 CSUN Water Polo dropped both of its games on day one of the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday. The Matadors fell to No. 1 USC, 13-3, to start the day and CSUN suffered an 8-4 defeat at the hands of No. 7 Arizona State. Madeleine Sanchez scored three goals on the day, including two against the Trojans, while Paula Abellan Garcia, Lindsey Garcia, Shannon Hovanesian and Katelyn Fairchild each had a goal in the two matches. Goalkeeper Niki Van Vugt set a career high with 10 saves against ASU.

In the morning contest, the Matador struck first early with a score in the opening minute to take the lead against the top-ranked Trojans. Sanchez netted her 30th goal of the season 00:42 into the game to put CSUN on top 1-0. USC quickly answered back with a goal 1:00 later from Brigitta Games to square the match at 1-1. Ioanna Haralabidis found the netting twice to add to the lead and USC's leading scorer, Stephania Haralabidis, made it 4-1 with a tally in the final seconds of the period.

Much like last week's contest between the two teams, USC kept its momentum rolling through the second period, shutting out the Matadors in the period for the second-straight week. A 4-0 period from USC gave the Trojans an 8-1 lead at intermission. USC kept the pressure on into the third, holding CSUN scoreless until Sanchez broke the drought on a goal via a penalty shot with 00:13 left in the period.

The Trojans added three more goals in the fourth and held CSUN to a single tally in the final seconds of the period to post the 13-3 win.

Sanchez, Hovanesian, McKenzie Pollei and Alexis Elias each posted field blocks in defeat while Garcia led the team with two steals.

The Matadors looked to bounce back in the afternoon game against the Sun Devils as the teams engaged in a defensive battle. Arizona State registered the first three goals of the game to go ahead 3-0 until Hovanesian put CSUN on the scoreboard with a tally with 2:11 left in the quarter.

The teams battled in a defensive stalemate in the second quarter as neither side scored until Taylor Bertrand struck a shot past Van Vugt to give ASU a 4-1 lead. For the third-straight match, CSUN went scoreless in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing by three.

The Matadors quickly scored in the third on a goal from Abellan Garcia but CSUN would not get any closer throughout the period. The teams traded goals throughout the quarter as Garcia and Sanchez each posted tallies. CSUN remained within striking distance after Sanchez's goal and only trailed 6-4 heading to the fourth.

CSUN kept the Sun Devils out of the scoring column in the early minutes of the fourth but the Matadors could not make up any ground during that time span. Arizona State continued to keep CSUN at bay over the final minutes including adding a pair of insurance goals to pull out the 8-4 victory.

Fairchild registered a team-high four steals in the match and she recorded two assists. Taitum Herrington led CSUN with two field blocks and both Elias and Sanchez each posted a pair of steals.
CSUN will compete twice more on Sunday at the UCI Invite. The Matadors will face Loyola Marymount at 10:30 a.m. to start the day and CSUN will meet either San Diego State or UC Santa Barbara in the afternoon with a time yet to be determined.Â
