NORTHRIDGE, CA - Behind the play of junior Felix Mory, the CSUN men's golf team is tied for fifth after two rounds of the Del Walker Intercollegiate Monday at Virginia Country Club.
Mory, who had a hole-in-one on the par three 14th hole, led the field after 18 holes after firing a three-under 67. Mory's 67 matches the 67 Tim Snyder carded in the season-opening Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate for CSUN's low round of the season. The junior from Bourghelles, France came back with a one-under 69 in the afternoon round and is currently second at four-under 136. Long Beach State's Michael Chen leads the field at eight-under 132.
"Felix hit the ball really well and he putted better today," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "That's kind of been his frustration this year so today was certainly better. Obviously our goal is to play well tomorrow and get a fourth score. A top three finish is definitely reachable."Â
Sophomore Joey Varnam is bidding for his first top 20 finish of the season as he is tied for 24th at five-over 145. Varnam posted rounds of 73-72 on Monday and is just one shot out of the top 20 heading into Tuesday's final round.
Tomas Skajem, one of three Matadors competing as individuals, was 18th after an opening round two-over 72. But a second round 76 dropped the CSUN freshman into a tie for 35th at eight-over 148. Tavit Garabedian is tied for 56th at 11-over 151 (78-73) and Tim Snyder and Luis Calderon are tied for 62nd at 12-over 152 with Snyder posting rounds of 77-75 and Calderon finishing at 76-76. Conrad White is tied for 68th at 14-over 154 (77-77) and Sam Engel is 72nd at 18-over 158 (72-86).
As a team, CSUN carded consecutive rounds of 289 which is just four shots off the team's season low. At 578, the Matadors are just one shot out of fourth and six shots out of third. Cal Poly holds the team lead at four-under 556, two shots better than host Long Beach State.
The third and final round gets underway Tuesday morning beginning at 9:40 a.m.
