Comeback Effort Falls Short for CSUN at Long Beach State

Senior Jasmine Johnson Scores Career-High 17 Points
LONG BEACH, Calif.-- The CSUN women's basketball team (5-17, 3-5 Big West) lost 74-71 to Long Beach State Thursday night in overtime at The Walter Pyramid. The Matadors made a spirited comeback in the fourth period to force the extra frame, but the 49ers pulled away in overtime to snap the Matadors' three-game winning streak.
Trailing by eight at halftime, the Matadors had a strong third period to get back in the game. CSUN won the 10-minute frame 15-8 and Maulupe hit her third 3-pointer of the game to draw CSUN to within 48-47 after the third period.
At the start of the fourth period, Cole hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 50-50 and Maulupe hit 1-of-2 free throws to give CSUN a narrow 51-50 advantage. Long Beach State then scored the next seven points to lead 57-51 with 5:36 left in the game.
Cole hit another big 3-pointer and Fluker tied the game up at 63-63 with a put back in the key. Long Beach State did not get a shot off on its final possession and the teams went to the extra period.
In overtime, the 49ers got six quick points from Madison Montgomery and led 72-67 with less than a minute left in the period. Long Beach State struggled at the free throw line and the Matadors had a pair of looks at the end of the game to tie the contest but neither went down.
Matador freshman Channon Fluker kept her double-double streak alive, finishing with 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. She was 9-of-15 from the field and also had three blocked shots and a career-high three assists.
Senior Jasmine Johnson scored a career-high 17 points in defeat. She finished 6-of-8 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds to go with three assists and four steals.
Sophomore Serafina Maulupe had 14 points for the Matadors. She tied a season high with seven rebounds and dished out three assists before fouling out. Â
Junior Emily Cole tied a season high with four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. She added four assists and a steal in a career-high 41 minutes of action. Freshman Cheyenne Allen knocked down some crucial free throws in overtime to keep CSUN in the contest and finished with seven points, five rebounds and three assists.
CSUN jumped out to a very fast start, taking a 5-0 lead and forcing a Long Beach State timeout less than a minute into the game. After Tessa Boagni hit a jumper to extend the Matadors' lead to 13-5, the 49ers went on a 19-2 run to take a 24-15 lead less than two minutes into the second period. The 49ers led 16-15 after the first period as a result of that run.
Maulupe hit a 3-pointer to stem the lead and pull CSUN back to within 27-21 midway through the second period. Fluker got the Matadors to within 30-25 after a pair of lay-ups, but Long Beach State scored the next 10 points and led 40-25 with a little less than three minutes left in the half.

Turnovers plagued the Matadors all evening. CSUN committed 27 turnovers in the loss, resulting in 28 points for the 49ers. Long Beach State also got 12 fast-break points and both teams finished with 30 points in the paint.
