Channon Fluker records sixth-straight double-double
RIVERSIDE,Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (5-18, 3-6 BWC) lost 83-76 Saturday afternoon to UC Riverside at the SRC Arena in a Big West Conference game broadcast on ESPN3. Channon Fluker posted her sixth-straight double-double and Katelin King scored all of her career-high 17 points in the fourth period, but the Matadors could not overcome the Highlanders, who remained perfect in league play.
Trailing by 14 moments into the fourth period, CSUN attempted a comeback behind the 3-point shooting of King. A redshirt sophomore from West Sacramento, King tied a career high with five 3-pointers and added a pair of free throws in the frame. The Matadors got to within 73-70 with roughly two minutes to play after a trey from King. That would be as close as CSUN would get as UCR connected on 10 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.Â
The game got away from CSUN in the third period. After the Matadors scored the first four points of the quarter, the Highlanders out-scored them 22-10 for the rest of the frame. CSUN finished the period just 3-of-11 from the field compared to 10-of-19 for UCR.Â
Turnovers also hampered CSUN on the road for the second time this week. The Matadors committed 24 turnovers in the game which resulted in 26 points for the Highlanders. CSUN had 12 turnovers in each half and UC Riverside finished with 17 steals Saturday.Â
Fluker posted her sixth-straight double-double, finishing with 20 points and 17 rebounds in 36 minutes of action. In nine Big West Conference games, Fluker is averaging more than 17 points and 12 rebounds per contest.Â
Both Serafina Maulupe and Jasmine Johnson finished with 10 points in defeat. For Johnson, Saturday's effort marked the first time in her CSUN career that she posted back-to-back games in double-figures. She added five rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes. Maulupe added three assists in 24 minutes off the bench before fouling out.Â
CSUN got off to a quick start Saturday as Emily Cole knocked down a pair of 3-pointers early in the first period. She added a career-high five assists in 34 minutes of work. Still, the Matadors trailed 22-20 after the first period and 36-32 at halftime. Fluker had eight points and eight rebounds at the break for CSUN.Â
For the game, CSUN finished 29-of-61 (47.5 percent) from the field and 7-of-20 (35 percent) from 3-point range. UC Riverside finished at an even 50 percent (34-of-68) from the field and 25 percent (3-of-12) from 3-point range. The Matadors held a 38-30 advantage in rebounds and got 20 points from their bench.Â
CSUN returns to action on Saturday, Feb.13 with a home game against UC Irvine. Tip off is slated for 4 p.m. from The Matadome.Â
