Matador Track & Field off to Strong Start in Outdoor Season

CSUN Competed in Meets at USC and at San Diego State
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's and women's track & field programs have turned in some notable performances early in the NCAA Outdoor season at the USC Trojan Invitational and at the SDSU Aztec Invitational over the first two weekends of the campaign. Both teams will look to continue to improve on the marks set in the first two meets as they work towards the Big West Outdoor Championships in early May.Â
"I have been impressed with the performances of our individuals early in the season," CSUN head coach Avery Anderson said. The throwers in general have completely stepped up and are competing at a high level. Brianna Cueva is head and shoulders above where she was in previous seasons and the rest of the group, both men and women, have all had incredible starts to their outdoor seasons."Â
"Our decathletes competed well this past week in an early-season multi-event and Gadenia Centanaro had a record-setting weekend in the pole vault, establishing herself as one of the top pole vaulters in program history. Finally, our sprint group had a strong opening to the campaign and Laurie Hennigan established herself as a contender in the Big West Conference fresh out of the gates," Anderson added. "I am very excited about the year to come."Â
USC Trojan Invitational Recap
At the season-opening USC Trojan Invitational, the Matadors competed with multiple Division I programs in a competitive setting early in the schedule. Competing at the event were the host Trojans, BYU, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Hawai'i, San Diego State and Washington State.Â
On the women's side, Gardenia Centanaro won the pole vault by clearing 3.85m (12-07.50 feet). Jakayla Daniels, Brianna Cueva and Elena Lopez led a strong contingent in the shot put, finishing second, fourth and sixth, respectively. Daniels went 14.55m (47-09.00) while Cueva finished at 14.21m (46-07.50) and Lopez went 13.67m (44-10.25). Cueva continued her strong weekend with a third-place finish in the discus, spinning the disc 54.83m (179-11) to place among the early national leaders in the event.Â
In the long jump, Sydney Barry placed fifth with a leap of 5.52m and Niema Poindexter placed fourth in the triple jump at 11.37m. Katie Alvarenga led four Matadors in the 3000m run, placing ninth in 10:29.78. Rachel Naumann posted a second-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase, completing the event in a time of 11:18.33.Â
Moving to men's results, Andre McBride placed third in the 100m dash in 10.84 seconds while Iam Harriott (10.87) finished seventh. In the 200m. Harriott posted a fifth-place finish in 21.66 seconds. In the 3000m, Mario Ramirez placed fourth in a time of 8:38.66 to lead four Matadors in the event.Â
In the field events, Lohnnie Tape-Jackson finished second in the high jump by clearing 2.10m (6-10.75). Josh Webster then placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 7.04m (23-01.25).Â
The throwing events brought CSUN some top performances on the men's side as well. Joshua Ji, Zach Rosales and Dawaun Lucas finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the shot put. Ji led the trio with a heave of 16.79m (55-01.00). In the discus, Daniel Swarbrick finished fifth at 51.36m (168-06) and Ji placed ninth at 50.18m (164-07). Swarbrick then recorded a third-place finish in the hammer throw at 55.73m (182-10) and Rosales finished ninth at 52.03m (170-08).Â

SDSU Aztec Invitational Women's Recap
In the 100m dash, senior Laurie Henigan finished third overall in a time of 11.86 seconds, edging out the next four finishers by less than .04 of a second. Fellow senior Shamlyn Pinchback finished 16th at 12.27 seconds and Henigan then posted a seventh-place finish in the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.26 seconds.Â
Moving to the distance events, junior Cynthia Martinez posted a sixth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing in a time of 11:52.18. Three Matadors ran in the 5000m invitational with senior Elizabeth Nelson posting a team-best finish of 13th in 18:25.41.Â
In the field events, senior Gardenia Centanaro earned a seventh-place finish in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 3.98m (13-05) while Niema Poindexter posted a 10th-place finish in the triple jump at 11.01m (36-01). Â
In the shot put, senior Jakayla Daniels finished third with a top throw of 15.36m (50-04) while sophomore Elana Lopez finished fifth with a put of 14.55m (47-07). Junior Brianna Cueva also competed in the event, finishing eighth with a throw of 14.08m (46-02). The discus saw Cueva place fourth with a throw of 52.32m (171-07). Finally, sophomore Maddison Ittner placed ninth in the hammer throw with a top heave of 49.39m (162-00).Â
SDSU Aztec Invitational Men's Recap
The men's team got a pair of outstanding performances in the decathlon as junior Taylor Cudequest finished second with 6,278 points while sophomore Re'Quan Harley finished third with 5,895 points. Harley won the 100m dash and long jump and tied for first in the high jump while Cudequest placed second in the discus and was third in the 100m dash, long jump, shot put and 400m dash.Â
Four Matadors competed in the 100m dash with senior Kiyoshi Johnson leading the participants with a 15th-place finish in 10.98 seconds. In the 200m dash, senior Andre McBride finished fifth in a time of 21.61 seconds while Tyree Harriott and Isaiah Cantu also competed in the event. Harriott was the top Matador finisher in the 400m run, placing 14th in a time of 51.59 seconds.Â
The 800m run saw five Matadors compete with freshman Mario Ramirez leading the quintet with a 12th-place finish in 1:56.00. Ramirez then placed seventh in the 1500m run in 4:00.58. Another freshman, Alex Diaz, placed 11th in the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 10:12.88.Â
Moving to the field events, senior Kurt Felicitas posted a third-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 13.96m.Â
The throwing events brought some top efforts from the men's team. In the hammer throw, junior Daniel Swarbrick placed second with a throw of 56.40m (185-03) while Josh Ji (55.72m - 182-08) and Zach Rosales (53.57m - 176-02) finished third and fourth, respectively.
In the discus, Swarbrick placed sixth with a throw of 52.13m (171-03) while Ji was eighth with a throw of 50.20m. (164-07) In the shot put, Rosales finished third with a put of 17.31m (56-08).Â
