The Matadors look to get back on the winning track this weekend when the Rainbow Warriors visit Matador Field. In last weekend's Big West action, the Matadors suffered three losses at No. 9 UC Santa Barbara. CSUN lost a pitcher's duel in game one, 1-0, and dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision in the middle game of the series. In the finale on Sunday, UCSB defeated the Matadors, 8-2.
Angel Rodriguez tossed six quality innings in the series opener against the Gauchos, allowing just one earned run. The Matadors also received solid contributions from several members of their lineup including Branden Berry, Fred Smith and Elias Orona who each recorded four hits in the three games. Berry also drove in four of the Matadors' six runs against UCSB and recorded two doubles while Smith scored two runs and Orona stole two bases.
With 54 hits on the season, Smith continues to lead the Big West Conference in total hits while sitting in sixth-place in batting average (.346). He has also maintained his hot hitting in Big West play, batting .333 with three RBI and three runs scored. Nolan Flashman has also swung the bat well against conference opponents, batting .320 in three Big West series to go along with two home runs, four runs and four RBI.
Heading into this weekend's series, Berry leads the team with 28 runs batted in, a .465 on-base percentage and eight doubles while he is second on the team in runs (26) and batting average (.331). Berry has also driven in a team-leading six runs over nine conference contests.
Fresh off a strong start at UCSB, Rodriguez gets the start in the series opener against Hawai'i. The senior right-hander is 3-3 with a 3.72 ERA while he has struck out 42 batters in 46.0 innings. Left-handed pitcher Kenny Rosenberg (4-1, 2.98 ERA) will face the Rainbow Warriors on Saturday and right-hander Andrew Weston (5-3, 3.07 ERA) starts in the finale. Rosenberg struck out seven in his last start to push his team-best total to 77 while Weston has allowed just one run over his last 12 innings of work.
CSUN leads the all-time series with Hawai'i, boasting a 27-15 overall record. The Matadors have won two of three series since the Rainbow Warriors joined the Big West Conference in 2013. Last season, the Matadors dropped two of three games at Hawai'i despite outscoring the Rainbow Warriors, 8-7, in the series.
A Closer Look at Hawai'i
After dropping two of three games to visiting Cal Poly last weekend, the Rainbow Warriors are 17-17 on the season and in third place in the Big West Conference standings with a 6-3 record. Hawai'i defeated the Mustangs, 6-3, last Friday at Les Murakami Stadium but fell in the final two games of the series.
Jacob Sheldon-Collins is second in the conference in batting with a .394 average while the senior shortstop has scored 20 runs and tallied 18 RBI. Fifth in the conference in runs batted in, sophomore Eric Ramirez has driven in 25 runs, walked 24 times and scored 16 runs for Hawai'i. Junior right-handed pitcher Brendan Hornung (3-5, 2.48 ERA) faces the Matadors in the series opener while senior righty Kyle Von Ruden (5-1, 2.78 ERA) starts on Saturday and senior left-hander Alex Hatch (3-4, 4.65 ERA) takes to the hill in the finale.
