Matadors Continue to Prepare for Big West Championships
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- With the Big West Championships less than a month away, the CSUN men's and women's track and field programs continue to train and participate in meets around the country in preparation for the event on May 6-7 and 13-14 at Long Beach State. Having competed in numerous meets, the Matadors have begun to set the stage for a strong performance not only at the Big West Championship, but also at the NCAA Regional and National Championships.Â
The NCAA Western Regional Championships will be held on the campus of the University of Kansas at Rock Chalk Park from May 26-28. The top 48 from each region, including any individual conference champion who is not among the top 48, advance to the regionals and from there, the top 12 move on to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on the campus of the University of Oregon June 8-11.Â
Men's Update
Junior Andre McBride checks in at fourth in the Big West in the 100m dash thus far, having clocked a season-best time of 10.64 seconds at the Stanford Invitational. Fellow junior Ian Harriott finds himself sitting 13th in the league standings, but is outside the top 10 by just .09 seconds. A third junior Kiyoshi Johnson, is tied for 18th at 10.92 seconds.Â
McBride is fourth in the 200m with a season-best time of 21.91 seconds which he ran at the Aztec Invitational. Harriott is seventh among Big West competition in the 200m at 21.66 seconds in the Trojan Invitational.Â
In the 400m, senior Isaiah Cantu is 20th in a season-best time of 49.54 seconds, but 10th place is less than a second ahead of that time. Senior Anass Zouhry is currently third in the 800m at 1:50.76 which he ran at the Stanford Invitational.Â
In the 5000m, freshman Mario Ramirez currently sits 16th in a time of 15:05.59 at the Beach Invitational. In the 3000m steeplechase, sophomore Lugardo Chavez ranks 10th at 9:51.10.Â
Moving to field events, junior Lohnnie Tape-Jackson is second in the conference in the high jump with a season-best clearance of 6-10.75 feet (2.10m) which he accomplished at the Trojan Invitational. That mark ranks 32nd in the NCAA Western Region.Â
Josh Webster checks in at seventh in the long jump, having a season-best leap of 23-01.25 (7.04m) at the Trojan Invitational. Re'Quan Harley is 10th at 22-06.25 (6.86m) and freshman Kurt Felicitas is 13th at 22-05.50 (6.82m) in the event.Â
Webster is currently fifth in the triple jump at 48-01.75 (14.67m) and Felicitas is sixth at 48-00.50 (14.64m), having both accomplished their best marks at the Stanford Invitational.Â
Junior Louis Pancitti and sophomore Mark Nicolas rank 12th and 13th, respectively, in the pole vault thus far. Pancotti cleared 15-03.75 (4.67m) at the Aztec Inviational while Nicolas cleared 15-01 (4.60m) at the Stanford Invitational.Â
The throwers continue to excel for CSUN. In the shot put, the Matadors ranks second, third and fourth in the event behind the work of Zach Rosales, Dawaun Lucas and Josh Ji. Rosales leads the group in the event at 56-09.50 (17.31m) while Lucas (55-11, 17.04m) and Ji (55-01, 16.79m) are right behind him. Rosales ranks 43rd in the event in the NCAA Western Region while Lucas is 52nd.Â
In the discus, junior transfer Daniel Swarbrick is third at 171-0 (52.13m) while Ji is sixth at 164-08 (50.20m). Swarbrick is also seventh in the hammer throw with a season best hurl of 189-10 (57.86m) at the Baylor Invitational. Ji is 10th in the hammer at 182-10 (55.72m), needing less than four feet to move into eighth.Â
Finally, Taylor Cudequest ranks fifth in the conference in the decathlon, having scored 6,278 points at the Aztec Invitational. Harley is seventh in the league after scoring 5,895 points at the Aztec Invitational.Â
Women's Update
Senior Laurie Henigan is third currently in the 100m dash, clocking in at 11.86 seconds at the Aztec Invitational. She also ranks ninth in the conference in the 100m hurdles at 14.26 seconds, again ran at the Aztec Invitational. Senior Shamlyn Pinch back is 16th at 14.66 seconds, but sixth place in the league checks in at just 14.09 sconds.Â
Junior Ashley Bamberg turned in a solid performance at the Baylor Invitational, running the 400m in 56.02 seconds to rank fourth in the league. Fellow junior Mianni Brown is 14th among the league in the event at 57.48 seconds.Â
In the 10,000m, senior Elizabeth Nelson ranks fourth in the Big West with a time of 36:42.17 which she ran at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Rachel Duriez (41:09.05) and Kimberly Newton (41:23.94) rank seventh and eighth in the event, respectively. Â Junior Racael Naumann checks in at ninth in the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 11:18.13 at the Trojan Invitational.Â
Sophomore Gardenia Centanaro is second in the pole vault thus far, having cleared 13-00.75 (3.98m) at the Aztec Invitational. That marks ranks 37th in the NCAA Western Region. Caitlin Nilssen (11-08, 3.55m) is currently 14th in the event in the league.Â
In the long jump, sophomore Sydney Berry is 13th  at 18-01.50 (5.52m), but moving up to ninth is less than five inches. Sophomore Niema Poindexter is in the same situation in the triple jump, currently ranking 12th at 37-05.75 (11.42m) with eighth place a little more than a foot away.Â
Senior Jakayla Daniels ranks second in the shot put at 52-07.25 (16.03m), which she accomplished at the Baylor Invitational and ranks 22nd in the NCAA Western Region. Sophomore Elana Lopez is on her heels at 47-09 (14.55m) and junior Brianna Cueva is seventh at 46-11 (14.30m).Â
Cueva leads the Big West in the discus thus far, having tossed a season-best 179-11 (54.83m) at the Trojan Invitational. That marks ranks 10th in the NCAA Western Region while Daniels is fourth in the conference and 37th in the NCAA Western Region at 164-04 (50.08m) in the event.Â
Upcoming Weeks
The Matadors have a pair of meets before the Big West Championships. CSUN will travel to Clovis, CA to compete in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Fresno State at April 23 and then travel to Orange County to compete in the Big 3 Meet on April 30 hosted by Cal State Fullerton.Â
