NORTHRIDGE, CA - For the first time in 15 years, CSUN will host a men's golf conference championship. The Big West Conference will descend on Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley next week as nine schools will battle for the conference crown.
The Matadors have not won a conference team championship since 2000 when CSUN won the Big Sky Conference title. That was also the last time the Matadors hosted a title event as CSUN won its first and only Division I conference championship at River Ridge C.C. in Oxnard.
"Wood Ranch is a championship golf course, this will be a first class event and a good test for all the teams," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "I hope we have an advantage since this is one of our home courses but the players still need to execute when the flag is up."
This years conference championship will be held at Wood Ranch Golf Club where CSUN hosts the Bill Cullum Invitational every October. The three day championship tournament gets underway Monday, May 2 at 9 a.m. 18 holes will be played each day (Monday-Wednesday) with a practice round scheduled for Sunday, May 1.
Live scoring will be available through Golfstat all three days of the championship event. Spectators are permitted to follow championship play all three days. There is no charge for admission to the conference championship.
UC Davis comes in as the top seeded team while UC Irvine is the defending team champion after defeating the Aggies by a single stroke in 2015. Cal Poly's Justin De Los Santos is the defending individual champion after carding a two-over 212 at San Luis Obispo Country Club last April.
Wood Ranch Golf Club has hosted numerous CSUN events including the 20-year old Cullum Invitational in addition to CSUN women's golf's annual Matador Invitational. The challenging Wood Ranch course is a par-72 layout which plays to a yardage of 6,930 yards. Â

Since joining the Big West Conference in 2002, the Matador men have finished as high as third (2004, 2008, 2011) with Nick Delio, Kyler Sauer and Pete Sisich each finishing a CSUN-best second. Sauer was second by five shots in 2014, Delio was second by four shots in 2011 and Sisich was the runner-up by a single shot in 2003.
Junior Felix Mory comes into the conference championship as one of the hottest players in the Big West. Mory, who leads CSUN with a 73.3 scoring average, has three top five finishes in seven spring tournaments including the Matadors' only individual win at the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate last week (Apr. 11-12). Mory's win was the Matadors' first individual title since Chris Russo won at Southern Utah in 2012.
Senior Tim Snyder is the only Matador returning from the 2015 championship tournament as he finished tied for 33rd as a junior. Snyder, who has a pair of top 20 finishes this spring, comes in with 74.9 scoring average, third-best on the squad.
Junior Sam Engel (75.3), who won the Arizona Publinks last week, could also figure into the individual chase while Tavit Garabedian (77.0) and Luis Calderon (78.0) round out the CSUN starting five. As a team, the Matadors have a pair of top five finishes in 2015-16 with their best finish coming at the Anteater Invitational in March where CSUN took third.
"I have confidence in all of my guys; we've had a bit of an inconsistent season but I think we're definitely capable of winning the championship," added Bracken. "You can't win the championship on the first day but you sure can lose it. My goal for the team is to be in contention going into the last round on Wednesday."
