Matadors Finish Season with 10-13 Overall Record
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (10-13) lost 4-1 to UC Santa Barbara Friday morning in a Big West Tourament semifinal at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Sophomore Kiryang Kim wrapped up her season with another strong performance in singles, but the Gauchos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and took three of the first four singles matches to finish in posting the victory.Â
"Coach Ciuffo and I are extremely proud of how the squad competed today," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "We ask that they leave it all on the court and after a very tough match yesterday, they came back and did exactly that in battling a team with a ton of talent."Â
Kim finished the year 9-10 overall in singles play, but 7-3 over her final 10 matches. She won her No. 5 draw 6-1 and 6-3 to give CSUN its only point on the day. She also won her singles match in Thursday's upset of Cal State Fullerton and overcame a sluggish start to the season to finish the year as one of the Matadors' hottest players.Â
In their earlier match-up this season, the Matadors won two of the three doubles matches against the Gauchos to earn the early advantage. Unfortunately, UCSB avenged that earlier defeat and won the No. 1 draw 6-3 and the No. 3 draw 6-4 to win the contest's first point.Â
Kristen Poei and Mickey Hsu finished the season with an 11-10 overall mark while competing entirely at the No. 1 draw. Mari Taslagyan and Kim ended the year with a 10-6 overall record, primarily at the No. 3 draw.Â
Hsu, Vivian Lin and Taslagyan all fell in straight sets in singles action, dropping points at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 draws. Taslagyan ended the year 11-11 overall and tied with freshman Skyla Alcon for the team lead with 11 singles victories. Hsu finished the year 10-12 while Lin was 5-17.Â
CSUN finished the year with a 10-13 overall record after finishing with a 3-5 mark in Big West action. The 2016 All-Big West Women's Tennis Team will be announced next week.Â
