NORTHRIDGE, CA---
On a rain-filled Saturday afternoon, No. 25 CSUN Water Polo (10-17, 0-3 BWC) fell to No. 4 Hawai'i (18-5, 3-0 BWC) by the final of 17-11 at Matador Pool. Sophomore Shannon Hovanesian recorded her second hat trick of the season while Katelyn Fairchild and Alexis Elias each scored two. The Matadors battled the Rainbow Warriors in a back-and-forth contest throughout the first half but Hawai'i would pull away in the final two quarters to claim the Big West Conference match.
The fourth-ranked Rainbow Wahine got off to a strong start in the first quarter. After each side came up empty on their first possessions, Irene Gonzalez gave Hawai'i the early lead with two goals in the opening 2:04. Taylor Molde connected on the third Hawai'i tally of the quarter 42 seconds later followed by Gonzalez's third score with 4:09 left on the clock.
Trailing 4-0, CSUN finally put a stop to Hawai'i's scoring spree with a bouncing shot from Shannon Hovanesian. The Rainbow Wahine would have an answer though as Nikki-Marie Bell found the net late on the shot clock on the ensuing possession.
Trying to get back into the game, CSUN finished the first quarter in strong fashion. Fairchild fired in a shot with 1:43 left and the Matadors made two key defensive stops to head into the second trailing 5-2.
Riding the momentum generated at the end of the first quarter, the Matadors continued to creep back into the game. CSUN shut out Hawai'i for the first 4:46 while both Elias and Miranda Coleman recorded goals to cut the deficit to 5-4.
After nearly nine scoreless minutes, Hawai'i ended the scoring drought with back-to-back scores from Femke Aan and Carla Abellan, extending the lead back to 7-4. Taitum Herrington pulled CSUN to within two with 1:27 left in the half but the Rainbow Wahine picked up two late tallies to take a 9-5 advantage into intermission.
CSUN continued to keep pace with Hawai'i in the opening minutes of the third period as Madeleine Sanchez and Elias each picked up goals but the Rainbow Wahine would pull away in the period's closing minutes. Four unanswered tallies including Gonzalez's fifth of the day increased the advantage to 14-7 after three periods.
The Matadors netted three in the final period but Hawai'i maintained its lead down the stretch. Amy Yule recorded her 40th goal of the season in front of the net in the opening minute while Elias, Fairchild and Hovanesian each posted tallies in the fourth quarter. The Rainbow Wahine added two insurance goals in the final minutes including Gonzalez's sixth to secure the victory.
Sanchez's 63rd goal of the season in the third period gives her sole possession of eighth-place all-time for goals in a season at CSUN.
The Matadors return to the pool on Sunday for their home finale against UC Davis at 12 p.m. The team will honor seniors Taitum Herrington, Natalie Averell and Taryn Kamimoto in a special pre-game ceremony.
