Taylor Troost Earns Both Wins in the Circle for CSUN
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (33-22, 13-7 Big West) defeated UC Davis 6-5 and 3-1 Friday afternoon in a Big West Conference doubleheader at Matador Diamond. Freshman Taylor Troost tossed a total of 11.1 innings on the day, including a complete-game performance in the game two victory, to earn two wins in the circle while Mackenzie Babbitt and Katie Hooper enjoyed solid days at the plate and the Matadors stole eight bases over the two games to set a program Division I single-season record (90) for the third-straight year.Â
CSUN stole five bases in game one and three in game two to give the squad 90 heading into Sunday's Big West finale. Last year, the Matadors stole 84 bases to establish a new program Division I single-season record. In fact, the Matadors have established a new program record for the program's Division I single-season team stolen bases in each of the last three seasons and have a total of 243 stolen bases since the start of the 2014 season.Â
Taylor Glover and Savannah Horvath each had three stolen bases on the day, giving them 23 and 21 respectively for the season. Glover now has 68 for her career, the seventh-most in Big West Conference history while Horvath is up to 37 in her career to tie her for sixth in program history. Taylor Nate and Babbitt had the other stolen bases in the other two victories and Nate is now ninth in program history with 31 in her career.Â
Game one was a wild affair that saw UC Davis jump out to a 4-0 lead. The Aggies tagged CSUN starter Daphne Pofek for the four runs on seven hits and she was lifted in the third for Troost. The freshman came in and tossed 4.1 innings of three-hit relief with four strikeouts to earn her seventh win of the season as the Matadors rallied behind her.
The Matadors clawed back for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Maylynn Mitchell, Mackenzie Babbitt and Taylor Glover strung together consecutive singles and Mitchell scored on Glover's knock when the Aggies committed a throwing error. With Babbitt on third, Glover broke for second during the next at-bat and a throwing error on the play allowed Babbitt to score.Â
In the fourth, CSUN scored a third run. Ariana Wassmer started the inning with a single, Nate ran for her and stole second and Hooper drove her home with one of her two doubles on the day.Â
Hooper started the sixth with a walk and moved to second as Mitchell dropped down a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch sent her to third and she came home to tie the game on an RBI triple from Babbitt, who then herself scored on a wild pitch to give CSUN a 6-4 lead.Â
The Aggies did not go quietly in the seventh, scoring a run on an RBI double and putting the tying and go-ahead runs into scoring position with no outs. However, Troost got a pair of popouts and a strikeout looking to end the game and complete the CSUN comeback.Â
Game two was a much quicker affair as the teams combined to score four runs in the first two innings and nothing afterwards. Troost (8-8) scattered five hits and two walks and did not allow a run over the final six innings. In addition to her 8-8 record, Troost owns a 3.05 ERA and a .247 opponent batting average in 119.1 innings of work for the year.Â
CSUN grabbed the lead back from UC Davis with two runs in the bottom of the first. Babbitt and Glover had back-to-back singles and then executed a double steal to stand on second and third with no outs. Horvath drove in Babbitt with an RBI single and Madalyne Handy plated Glover with an RBI groundout.Â
In the bottom of the second, Hooper doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single from Mitchell. Hooper now has a team-high 12 doubles on the year and 35 for her career. Â
Karlie Habitz had a strong day behind the plate for CSUN, throwing out a pair of base runners caught stealing to give her 15 for the season.Â
The two teams will conclude the series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Matador Diamond. Before the start of the game, CSUN will honor its four seniors participating in the final home game of their career: Handy, Allison Lacey, Mitchell and Wassmer.Â
