NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- A total of 55 CSUN student-athletes were named to the 2016 Academic All-Big West Winter and Spring Sports Teams and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) All-Academic Men's Volleyball team. To qualify for the award, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, be at least a sophomore in academic standing and meet participation thresholds based on the sport. CSUN softball led the way with nine appointments while baseball and women's water polo added eight. The Big West announced the 52 CSUN student-athletes on Thursday while the MPSF honored three Matadors in late May.
CSUN Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Brandon E. Martin was proud of this group of successful Matador student-athletes across an array of sports.Â"All Matadors understand the importance of academic excellence and I'm incredibly proud that so many of our student-athletes earned academic all-conference honors this year," said Dr. Martin. "We also had a record number of student-athletes celebrated at Varsity N and at the new Matador Scholar-Athlete Honor Society breakfasts this year, and I know I speak for the coaches and staff when I reinforce how pleased we are that Matadors know how to succeed in the classroom as well as on the field of play."
"My staff and I are proud to see so many student-athletes honored for their academic work," CSUN softball head coach Tairia Flowers said. "Creating a culture of competition both on the field and in the classroom and having that balance gives the team a lot of confidence as they prepare for life after softball."
