NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (1-0) defeated Tulsa 2-1 Friday evening at Matador Soccer Field in both teams' 2016 season opener. Junior Papi Diouf scored eight seconds into the match to set a new Big West Conference record for fastest goal scored and sophomore Nicholas Grinde broke a 1-1 deadlock in the 83rd minute to lift the Matadors over the Golden Hurricane.Â
CSUN struck for a pair of breakaway goals to improve to 25-12-2 in its season openers and 29-10 in its home openers. Straight off the opening kick off, junior Emmanuel Usen Jr. played the ball back to senior Juan Fernando Samayoa. He lofted a ball over the top of the Tulsa defense and onto the feet of a streaking Diouf. Alone against the goalkeeper, Diouf blasted a shot into the far netting to put CSUN ahead early. The goal was Diouf's third of his Matador career while Usen Jr. and Samayoa each recorded their first assists of the season.Â
Tulsa took control of the game after the early deficit. The Golden Hurricane searched extensively for a tying goal in the first half, firing off 13 shots over the opening 45 minutes. The Golden Hurricane's best chance of the first half came in the 42nd minute when Rollie Rocha hit the crossbar.Â
CSUN goalkeeper senior Kevin Marquez, making the first start of his Matador career, stood firm and recorded four saves in the opening half to keep CSUN ahead on the scoreboard. Â
In the second half, Tulsa continued to pressure for the equalizer. That finally came in the 60th minute as Juan Sanchez took a feed from Quinton Duncan and beat a diving Marquez to the far post.Â
Undeterred, CSUN fought back and got a break in the 83rd minute. With the Tulsa defense controlling the ball on its defensive back line, a poor pass allowed Grinde to steal possession and found himself alone against the goalkeeper. His hard shot to the left post found the side netting for his first career goal in his first career game as a Matador.Â
In all, Tulsa held a 19-6 advantage in shots and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. CSUN's defense, led by Gabe Robinson, Patrick Hickman, Darion Mealing, Samuel Dadzie and Stuart Close worked tirelessly to keep Tulsa from getting clean looks at the frame. The Matadors finished with a 15-8 advantage in fouls, but Tulsa picked up the game's two yellow cards.Â
CSUN returns to action next weekend with a pair of games in Albuquerque, NM on the campus of the University of New Mexico. On Friday, Sept. 2, the Matadors take on the host Lobos and then two days later square off with the Air Force Falcons.Â
