Matadors Return to Action Sunday vs. Air Force
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (1-1) lost 2-0 at New Mexico Friday night as part of the The TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational. Senior Kevin Marquez recorded six saves and junior Papi Diouf had a pair of shots on frame, but an early Lobos goal forced CSUN to press for an equalizer and New Mexico secured the victory with a late strike.
Meeting for the fourth-straight season and 18th time in the all-time series, CSUN and New Mexico tangled for 90 minutes Friday evening. The Lobos controlled the early possession and forced Marquez to make two saves in the game's opening nine minutes. Moments after defending three successive corner kick, CSUN fell behind 1-0 in 23rd minute as Niko Hansen found the netting at the near post.
New Mexico held a 9-1 advantage in shots and Marquez recorded three saves in the first half. Freshman Bar Shem Tov had the Matadors' only shot of the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Matadors worked to find a goal and Diouf had a header saved in the opening moments. CSUN also produced three corner kicks and a shot form Nicholas Grinde over the first 10 minutes of the second half.
However, the Lobos doubled their lead in the 70th minute off a strike from Devin Boyce. From there, Diouf had a close attempt saved in the 83rd minute and fired off his third shot of the match in the 87th minute.
The Lobos finished with a 14-5 advantage in shots and committed just three fouls to CSUN's nine. Two Matadors, Jumoke Hutton and Shane Steffes, went into the book with yellow cards. CSUN was also flagged for offsides three times.
The Matadors will look to rebound Sunday, Sept. 4 when they face the Air Force Falcons. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m. (PT).
