NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN Matadors dropped a straight-set decision (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) to the host Wyoming Cowgirls Saturday in their second match of the UniWyo Invitational in Laramie, WY.
After stuggling on offense Friday against Eastern Washington, CSUN looked for a bounce back effort against the host Cowgirls but was out-hit by the margin of .296-.076.
Sophomore Aeryn Owens had nine kills to pace the Matadors, hitting .103 on 29 swings. Redshirt freshman Melissa Eaglin added six kills (.167) while Rachel Diaz and Nada Dragovic each chipped in five kills. Senior Julie Haake was held in check for the second straight match as the CSUN opposite was limited to three kills on -.048 hitting.
Junior setter Lauren Conati posted 24 assists, six digs, two aces and two kills in the loss.
The Matadors got off to a good start scoring the first five points on kills from Owens, Dragovic and a Conati ace. A Haake hitting error capped a 6-1 Cowgirl run which knotted the score at 6. A Wyoming hitting error gave the Matadors their final lead of the set at 14-13 when the hosts rallied for five consecutive points to take control of the set.
CSUN led by as many as three in set two as Diaz's kill put the Matadors up 15-12. Another 4-1 Wyoming run, capped by the Cowgirls converting a CSUN overpass, tied the score at 16. The hosts then bumped its lead to 20-18 when Eaglin's attack was stuffed at the net. The lead was three at 24-21, when the Matadors staved off a pair of set points before Bayly Poor went of the CSUN block on set point.
Holding a slim 12-10 lead in the final frame, the Cowgirls rolled off five consecutive points to put the set out of reach. Six points was as close as the Matadors would get down the stretch as they fell in straight sets for the second straight match.
Laura Beach and Poor each reached double figures for Wyoming (4-5) as Beach had 11 kills on .471 followed by Poor with 10 (.286).
CSUN closes the UniWyo Invitational at 4 pm as the Matadors take on Samford.
