Matadors Continue Roadtrip at Utah Valley on Sept. 17
LOS ANGELES --- The CSUN men's soccer team (2-3) lost 4-0 to No. 8/9 UCLA Monday night in a non-conference game at Drake Stadium The Matadors held a 13-11 advantage in shots and had a few close calls, but the Bruins produced two goals in each half to claim the victory.Â
CSUN had its chances Monday night but could not find the netting. In the first half, a shot from Edwin Quiroz needed a diving save in the 35th minute from UCLA's Juan Cervantes and Alfonso Flores forced the Bruin defense to clear their lines on a piercing left-footed blast. Although they trailed 2-0 at the break, the Matadors held an 8-6 advantage in shots and forced two UCLA saves.Â
Thirty-seven seconds into the second half, freshman Bar Shem Tov produced a strong attempt on frame that required a save from Cervantes and resulted in a corner kick. In the 72nd minute, senior Patrick Hickman had a header saved off a corner kick from Juan Fernando Samayoa.Â
Unfortunately, the Bruins struck in the 11th minute behind Willie Raygoza and doubled their lead through Matthew Powell in the 25th minute. In the second half, Abu Danladi scored in the 75th minute and Blayne Martinez sealed the contest with a goal in the 90th minute.Â
In net, senior Kevin Marquez made four saves in taking the defeat. The teams combined for 17 corner kicks on the evening and CSUN was whistled for 13 fouls compared to two for UCLA.Â
The Matadors close out their five-match roadtrip with a contest at Utah Valley on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. (PT).Â
