Matadors Return Home on Sept. 22 to Host San Diego
OREM, Utah --- The CSUN men's soccer team (2-4-0) lost 1-0 at No. 19 Utah Valley Saturday evening in a non-conference contest at Clyde Field. Kevin Marquez made five saves in net for the Matadors, but the Wolverines pushed a header just inside the post in the 77th minute to win the first-ever meeting between the two programs.Â
After a scoreless first half that saw the teams combine for eight shots, Utah Valley turned up the pressure in the second half and sent several tests at Marquez. The Wolverines broke through when Skyler Milne headed in a cross from Joe Barakat with just over 13 minutes left to play.Â
CSUN pressed for an equalizer and produced shots on frame from Emmanuel Usen Jr. and Patrick Hickman, but both were denied by the Utah Valley goalkeeper. The Matadors finished the contest with seven shots, four of which came in the second half, and had the game's only two corner kicks over the 90 minutes. Bar Shem Tov and Usen Jr. each had two shots in the game for CSUN.Â
The match was a physical contest with Utah Valley holding a 17-11 edge in fouls committed. Andrew Rizeq saw a yellow card in the first half and Utah Valley's Aaron Caprio was booked in the second half.Â
The contest ends CSUN's five-match roadtrip and the Matadors' next contest will be at home against the University of San Diego. Kickoff from Matador Soccer Field is slated for 7 p.m. and there will be a Fan Fair before the contest in the parking lot directly south of the entrance to Matador Soccer Field.Â
