Juan Fernando Samayoa Scored Penalty Kick
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (2-4-1) played to a 1-1 draw with San Diego Thursday night in a non-conference match at Matador Soccer Field. Juan Fernando Samayoa scored a penalty kick in the 25th minute and Kevin Marquez made several big saves down the stretch to preserve the Matadors' draw with the Toreros.Â
On a cool, blustery night in the San Fernando Valley, CSUN and San Diego engaged in a physical contest that featured a combined 30 fouls and three yellow cards. The first of those cards came in the 25th minute and led directly to the Matadors' goal.Â
A turnover at midfield put Dre Deas through and in a two-on-one situation with Emmanuel Usen Jr. against the San Diego goalkeeper, Thomas Olsen. Inside the 18-yard box, Deas broke to his left and Olsen tackled him off the ball. The referee pointed to the spot and Samayoa converted with a driving shot for his first goal of the season.Â
CSUN held on to the lead through halftime and until the 67th minute when Allen Luhrs collected a rebound and beat Marquez with a low blast. In all, Marquez faced 17 shots from San Diego and recorded six saves over 110 minutes. His two biggest stops of the match came late in regulation as he denied the Toreros with a pair of diving punches in the 85th and 88th minute. Â
Seniors Gabe Robinson and Patrick Hickman played all 110 minutes for the Matadors on defense Thursday night. Nicholas Grinde finished with two shots on goal for the Matadors, nearly finding paydirt early in the contest off a long throw-in from Robinson. CSUN was whistled for offsides five times and successfully defended 10 San Diego corner kicks.Â
The Matadors close out the non-conference portion of their schedule on Sunday, Sept. 25 with a 7 p.m. contest at CSU Bakersfield. CSUN opens Big West Conference play at home next week, hosting UC Davis (Sept. 29) and Sacramento State (Oct. 1).Â
