CSUN Produces Four Different Goal Scorers in Victory
En Español
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- Four different Matadors scored as the CSUN men's soccer team (3-4-1) defeated CSU Bakersfield 4-1 Sunday evening in a non-conference match at the Main Soccer Field in Bakersfield. Gabe Robinson and Bar Shem Tov scored their first goals of the season, Juan Fernando Samayoa converted his second penalty kick of the weekend and Nicholas Grinde added his team-leading third goal of the year as the Matadors closed out non-conference play.Â
Looking to build some momentum as it heads into Big West Conference play, CSUN took advantage of the opportunities presented and the Matadors posted their 21st-straight victory when scoring at least two goals.
CSUN struck early, scoring in the 11th minute on its first attempt of the match. A foul set up a free kick from Samayoa, who found Gabe Robinson among a group of players. Â The senior headed the ball home for his second career goal. For Samayoa, the assist was his second of the season and eighth of his Matador career.Â
A key play occurred moments before the end of the first half as Anthony Negrete got a straight red card for an attempted challenge in the 43rd minute to put the Runners down a man. Each team also got a yellow card in the opening frame with Aaron Robles going into the referee's book.Â
The 1-0 lead held through halftime and in the 51st minute, CSUN doubled its advantage through a penalty kick from Samayoa. Emmanuel Usen Jr. was clipped in the penalty box, the referee pointed to the spot and Samayoa converted his second PK of the weekend.Â
Despite being down a man, CSUB continued to fight and pulled one back in the 63rd minute. Julian Zamora took a long ball up the sideline and with CSUN goalkeeper Kevin Marquez pressuring off his line, he sent a ball skidding along the surface to the back post and in to the netting.Â
With just over 11 minutes to play, Marquez and the defense made a huge stop from point-blank range. A cross switched the play to the right post and a ball back across the face of goal was then knocked down to the feet of Zamora. His shot from inside six yards was repelled by the Matadors as the team was credited with a save.Â
Right after that play, CSUN went back ahead by two goals on Grinde's team-leading third of the season. He took a long pass from Jumoke Hutton up the middle, fought off a defender and the CSUB goalkeeper and slotted home a driven shot in the 83rd minute.Â
The Matadors finished off the scoring in the 86th minute as Shem Tov  and Usen Jr. connected on a nifty give-and-go to put Usen Jr. into a dangerous position. He then played the ball off to Shem Tov and the freshman slammed a shot off the post and into the netting for the first goal of his Matador career. The assist was Usen Jr.'s team-leading third of the season.Â
In net, Marquez made two early saves in the first half, including a free kick from inside 23 yards, and finished with five saves over the 90 minutes. He sports a 1.44 goals-against-average, 40 saves and a .769 save percentage in over 750 minutes for the season.Â
CSUB held a narrow 14-13 advantage in shots and had all six of the contest's corner kicks. The game was another physical affair with the teams combining for 24 fouls and four bookings. Shem Tov also saw a yellow card for the Matadors.Â
The Matadors now start their quest for the Big West Championship by hosting UC Davis on Thursday, Sept. 29 at Matador Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. with Eduard Cauich and Jose Avalos calling all the action on the CSUN Sports Network.Â
