Juan Fernando Samayoa Scores Pair of Penalty Kick Goals
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (4-4-1, 1-0-0 BWC) defeated UC Davis 2-1 Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field in both teams' 2016 Big West Conference opener. Senior Juan Fernando Samayoa scored a pair of penalty kicks within a seven-minute span in the second half and the Matadors opened league play with an important three points in the league standings.Â
Scoreless after 45 minutes, the match exploded in a fury of penalty kicks starting at the end of the 58th minute. The Matadors built an attack up the left side of the pitch and Emmanuel Usen Jr. took the ball on the attack into the 18-yard box. He was shoved to the ground and Samayoa made the PK at 57:58 to put CSUN ahead 1-0.Â
Less than seven minutes later, Samayoa and CSUN struck for another penalty kick. Dre Deas made some nice moves to find himself behind the UC Davis defense when Kyle Higgins took him down in the area. Higgins saw a straight red card and Samayoa stepped to the spot and scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season.Â
Forty-seven seconds later, UC Davis struck back for a PK of its own. A tackle in the penalty area set up Noah Wilson and he scored to cut the CSUN lead in half.Â
The Matadors successfully defended their lead over the last 24 minutes to secure the victory and Kevin Marquez made one of his three saves over that span of the match. His biggest stop of the match came in the first half on a low, driving shot he was able to punch away and then collect the rebound.Â
In the first half, CSUN produced a pair of shots on goal that were turned away. Samayoa nearly struck on a free kick midway through the first half, but the UCD goalkeeper came up with a nice save to keep the match scoreless.Â
Bar Shem Tov and Samayoa each had four shots and Nicholas Grinde added three. The Matadors posted a season-high 19 shots in the contest and successfully defended three corner kicks. The teams combined for 23 fouls and four yellow cards. Stuart Close and Bradley Mulvey each went into the referee's book for CSUN.Â
The victory was CSUN's first at home against the Aggies since the 2012 season, when the Matadors won 2-0 and then captured the Big West Tournament Championship with a 1-0 victory in Davis.Â
The Matadors return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 against Sacramento State at Matador Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
