Matadors Claim Five of Six Singles Matches and Doubles Point
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Three Matadors won in both singles and doubles as the CSUN women's tennis team defeated UC Riverside 6-1 Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference match. Senior Kristen Poei and sophomores Elisa Elhadj and Skyla Alcon claimed singles and doubles victories over the Highlanders as CSUN claimed its first win of the season.Â
"Skyla played relaxed and competed at the level she is capable of showcasing," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "Kristen looks more confident every day and is getting back to playing at the high level she has show throughout her career. She and Vivian have come together nicely as a doubles team."Â
Alcon won the No. 3 singles draw in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0, without losing a game. Poei won at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-2 decision. In doubles action, Elhadj and Alcon teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles 6-1 while Poei teamed with Vivan Lin to win 6-1 in the second draw.Â
Elhadj continued her strong debut with a straight-set win in the No. 1 singles draw, 6-2 and 6-1. Kiryang Kim also posted a singles win, 6-0 and 6-4, in the No. 4 draw to give her five-straight wins in singles competition dating back to last season. Roenholt rounded out the singles winners for CSUN, claiming the No. 5 match with a 6-3, 6-2 decision for the first win of her Matador career.Â
"Elisa and Emma are getting used to the dual-match format and are growing each day and Kiryang has picked up right where she left off," Victor added.Â
CSUN returns to action on Monday, Jan. 30 with a home contest against Westmont. First serve for the Matadors' 2017 home opener is set for 2 p.m.Â
