CSUN Slips to 17th After 36 Holes at Pacific Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, CA - After an opening round 295 on Thursday, the CSUN men's golf team posted a second round 296 this afternoon to slip one spot to 17th at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.
CSUNÂ heads into the final round tied with Seattle at 15-over 591, 14 strokes out of a possible top 10 team finish. Santa Clara (562) continues to lead the team chase by three shots over second place BYU. A total of 20 teams are competing in the tournament at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Sophomore Michael Zhang had the Matadors' low round of the day Friday, firing a season-low round of one-under 71. Zhang, who opened the day tied for 62nd, moved up into a tie for 38th with teammate Felix Mory and others. The sophomore from San Diego, had an eagle on the par-5 11th hole while also adding three birdies. His 36-hole total of 145 is a season-low by one stroke.
Mory had a consistent round of one-over 73 after finishing round one at even-par 72. Mory had a single bogey in addition to 17 pars on Friday but was not able to get under par. Daniel Taplin was tied for 77th after an opening round three-over 75 but slipped two spots on the leaderboard Friday with an identical 75.
Gabriel Barnes was the final score CSUN counted on Friday as he posted a five-over 77 which dropped him from 62nd to 85th at seven-over 151. Individuals Sevian Frangipane and Joey Varnam matched scores for the second consecutive round as each followed up a first round 76 with a five-over 77 in round two. The CSUN duo is currently tied for 92nd at nine-over 153.
Jason McGuinness rounded out the Matador scoring as he struggled to a 10-over round of 82. McGuinness is currently 111th at 25-over 169.
The third and final round is scheduled for Saturday morning as CSUNÂ closes out the fall portion of the 2017-18 schedule.
