NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN men's golf team concluded the fall portion of the 2017-18 schedule Saturday with a 17th place at the conclusion of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.
In the final round, the Matadors matched their 295 from Thursday's opening round but we're unable to make any headway up the team leaderboard as they placed 17th out of 20 teams.
"We're going to take a little break and focus on academics and then re-group for the spring," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "The bottom line is we've got to have more than one guy shooting under par. We've got potential but right now it's untapped potential."
Junior Felix Mory, who was CSUN's low individual in all four fall tournaments, closed with a two-under 70 on Saturday to finish the tournament tied for 30th at one-under 215. Mory, who caps the fall season with a team-leading 71.2 scoring average, had five birdies over the final round.
Micheal Zhang also had a solid fall for the Matadors after finishing 47th at Pacific with a three round score of 219, his low 54-hole total this season. Zhang carded a final round two-over 74 which included three birdies. Daniel Taplin, who played in CSUN's final two tournaments and despite finishing 76th at Pacific, posted his low 54-hole total of the season. Taplin closed with a two-over 74 to finish the tournament at eight-over 224.
After posting round 74 on Thursday, Gabriel Barnes posted consecutive rounds of 77 to finish tied for 91st at 12-over 228. Jason McGuinness overcame a rough two rounds to close Saturday with a six-over 78 to finish the tournament 111th at 32-over 248.
CSUN also had a pair of individuals in the field as Joey Varnam finished tied for 91st at 12-over 228 (76-77-75) and Sevian Frangipane tied for 99th at 15-over 231 (76-77-78).
Santa Clara (834) led from start to finish to claim team champion honors while BYU's Patrick Fishburn claimed a one-shot win in the individual chase.
CSUNÂ is off from competition until Jan. 29 when the Matadors will tee it up at the Waves Challenge at Saticoy Country Club in Somis.
