CSUN Second Half Rally Falls Short As SDSU Defeats Matadors 58-55
11/14/2017 8:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN DIEGO, Calif.—A furious second half CSUN rally just fell short as San Diego State defeated the Matadors 58-55 Tuesday night at Viejas Arena.
Â
The teams were engaged in a defensive struggle for the majority of the first half. Coming out of the second quarter media timeout, the Aztecs forced six CSUN turnovers, keeping the Matadors off the scoreboard for the final 5:25 of the frame. San Diego State scored the final eight points of the first half to take a 31-22 lead into halftime.
Â
The Aztecs (2-0) would extend the run to 12-0 before Serafina Maulupe's three-pointer at the 7:25 mark cut the SDSU lead to 35-25. Three consecutive three-point field goals from Arantxa Gomez Ferrer and Lexy Thorderson (who made two in a row) quickly pushed the lead to 18 for the Aztecs.
Â
Down 21, CSUN connected on four consecutive field goal attempts to key a spurt that would reduce the San Diego State lead to 50-39 with just under a minute to play. The teams exchanged possessions before a Matadors' turnover led to a Thorderson three-pointer to end the quarter with SDSU in the lead 54-39.
Â
Destiny Brooks' three-pointer capped off a 7-0 CSUN spurt to start the fourth quarter that cut the San Diego State lead to eight. McKynzie Fort scored the first San Diego State points of the fourth at the 5:46 mark to again push the Aztecs into a double-digit lead. Tessa Boagni's field goal the next time down for CSUN made it an eight-point game.
Â
The teams traded stops before the Matadors went inside to Channon Fluker who scored with just over three remaining for a 56-50 score. Boagni's offensive rebound and put back reduced the score to 56-52. Maulupe sank a deep three to further reduce the SDSU lead with just over two to go. A Boagni miss led to a San Diego State possession. Geena Gomez was called for a five-second violation after an offensive rebound. CSUN called timeout, advanced the ball to half court and took possession. Terrin Sullivan missed a three-pointer, but Maulupe got the offensive board and drew a foul.
Â
She missed both free throw attempts, but Boagni got the offensive rebound. Thorderson stole the ball away from Maulupe and was fouled with 10.1 seconds remaining. SDSU called timeout and advanced the ball. The Matadors used a tight defense that forced the Aztecs to call their final timeout. Khalia Lark was fouled and was sent to the free throw line. Lark made both attempts to create a 58-55 score. CSUN called their final timeout and advanced the ball to half court.
Â
Thorderson fouled Brooks as the Aztecs were under the limit which took three seconds off the clock. A Brooks' three-pointer was short, but CSUN got the rebound and passed it back out to Brooks. Her attempt at the buzzer hit the front iron, giving the Aztecs the victory.
Â
CSUN held San Diego State to four points in the second quarter and 38% shooting for the game (21-of-64). The Matadors outrebounded the Aztecs 44-39. Boagni led the Matadors with her seventh career double-double. She scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Fluker scored 12 points while Maulupe had 11. Thorderson paced SDSU with 17 points. Fort scored 16 while Lark charted 13 points and nine rebounds.
Â
"I thought our defensive wasn't bad in the first half, but we had some breakdowns," said CSUN head coach Jason Flowers. "Those breakdowns led to some wide-open shots. Thorderson hit some big shots after we didn't locate her in transition. We were better than in our last game, so there was some progress."
Â
"We need to do a better job of understanding what to do on the offensive end and execute," Flowers continued. "I take full responsibility for that. We will go back to practice tomorrow and continue to help our kids to improve and be successful."
Â
The Matadors (0-2) travel to New Orleans this weekend to complete play in the Preseason Women's NIT. CSUN faces the University of New Orleans (0-1) in consolation round one Friday night. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. (PT). The Matadors will face either Houston (0-1) or Milwaukee (0-1) on Saturday at 12 p.m. (PT) in what could either be the championship final of the bracket or the third-place game of the bracket. New Orleans is already assigned to the 2:30 p.m. (PT) Saturday matchup.
