NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN returns to the road this weekend as the Matadors travel to New Orleans to complete the Preseason Women's NIT.
Â
CSUN (0-2) faces the University of New Orleans (0-1) in consolation round one Friday night. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. The Matadors will face either Houston (0-1) or Milwaukee (0-1) on Saturday at 12 p.m. in what could either be the championship final of the bracket or the third-place game of the bracket. New Orleans is already assigned to the 2:30 p.m. Saturday matchup. Coverage will be available on unoprivateers.com. All links can be found on GoMatadors.com on the women's basketball schedule page.
Â
New Orleans dropped a 66-57 decision to Louisiana in the first round of the Preseason WNIT last Friday night. Shania Woods led UNO with 13 points. Randi Brown is already third in Privateers' history in career scoring with 1,480 points. She is also the school record holder for most points in a game (45 vs Texas A&M-CC). This is the third time that CSUN and New Orleans are going to match up in women's basketball. The all-time series is tied at one with each team winning on the other's home floor during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
Â
Houston was defeated by No. 20 Texas A&M 83-65 last Friday night. Houston was led by Dorian Branch who scored a career-high 17 points. The Cougars return four of their top five leading scorers from a year ago including sophomore Jasmyne and Ashley Harris who were first and second respectively on the team. This would be the first time that CSUN and Houston would be playing a women's basketball game.Â
Â
Milwaukee lost 77-73 at Drake in the Preseason WNIT opener Nov. 10. Steph Kostowicz led Milwaukee with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Kostowicz was named Horizon League Player of the Week for her efforts against the Bulldogs. Her totals were the most by an individual player in the first round of the tournament. This would be the first time that CSUN and Milwaukee would be playing a women's basketball game.Â
Â
San Diego State defeated CSUN 58-55 Tuesday night. The Matadors nearly overcame a 21-point third quarter deficit before losing to the Aztecs. Tessa Boagni charted her seventh career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for CSUN.
Â
Channon Fluker has a chance to reach the 1,000 career-point plateau this weekend. The 6-4 center has scored 984 career points and is 17 away from becoming the 11th Matador to score at least 1,000 points in a CSUN career.
