SAN JOSE, Calif.—Channon Fluker scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for her 37th career double-double to lead CSUN past San José State 76-59 in women's basketball action Thursday night.
Â
CSUN connected on six of its first eight field goals (including three three-pointers) to take a 15-5 lead to begin the game. The media timeout came at the 3:50 mark. The Spartans came out of the break by scoring six straight points. San José State would outscore CSUN 10-4 as the Matadors led 19-15 after one.
Â
CSUN started strong again in the second. The Matadors outscored the Spartans 14-4 to begin the stanza. CSUN turned up the defense as the Matadors held San Jose State to only six points over the final 5:10 of the first half. Led by Serafina Maulupe who scored seven of her first half 17 points in the final five of the half, CSUN took a 41-25 advantage into halftime.
Â
"Serafia was pivotal in getting us off to a good start offensively," said CSUN head coach Jason Flowers. "It took time to establish our inside game, so she was really efficient on the offensive end and did a really good job on the defensive end as well."
Â
The Matadors looked inside to Fluker to begin the second half. Fluker scored eight straight points as CSUN built a 52-32 lead into the third quarter media timeout. San Jose State's comeback was hindered by Mikaylah Wilson being called for a foul and a technical in the same sequence. The Matadors made all four free throw attempts to extend the lead to 23. The third quarter ended with Fluker scoring 16 of the 26 CSUN third quarter points as the Matadors took a 67-38 advantage into the fourth.
Â
A 15-1 SJSU fourth period run cut into the Matadors' lead. The Spartans would whittle the CSUN advantage to 16 before a Juliana Louis basket would halt the run. With the Matador starters on the bench for most of the fourth, SJSU would outscore the Matadors 21-9 in the final 10 minutes.
Â
CSUN dominated the glass. The Matadors outrebounded the Spartans 55-22, 16-8 on the offensive end. CSUN scored 38 points in the paint, 17 on second chance opportunities. The Matadors limited SJSU to 32.3% shooting (20-of-62).
Â
Fluker did not play for most of the fourth quarter, but would end the night shooting 10-of-12 from the field. She was 5-of-7 from the field. Maulupe ended the game with 17 points. Tessa Boagni charted her eighth career double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Danae Marquez was the lone Spartans' player in double figures with 11 points.
Â
"We were able to establish our post players inside," Flowers said. "We got a chance to play everybody and get some game experience. All of those things are positive and we have to continue to get better, take care of the basketball and execute."
Â
CSUN (3-6) travels to Loyola Marymount (7-1) Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip. The Lions had a Thursday game at UC Santa Barbara cancelled due to the wildfires that have hit Southern California.
