Senior Rebecca Bell Earns Win vs. Seattle with Five Ks
STOCKTON, Calif. --- Senior Rebecca Bell and sophomore Taylor Troost combined to limit Seattle U to one hit as the CSUN softball team (3-8) defeated the Redhawks 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Libby Matson Invitational. In the Matadors' first game of the tournament, CSUN fell 4-2 Sacramento State.Â
Against the Hornets, CSUN jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Katie Hooper blasted her team-leading third home run of the season in the bottom of the first. However, Sac State would rally for four runs and five hits off CSUN starter Katie Chenault (0-1) in the top of the fourth.Â
The Matadors had their chances to rally, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. However, all they could muster was a sac fly from Jessica Alexander to cut the deficit to 4-2. In the bottom of the seventh, CSUN once again loaded the bases only to leave all three runners stranded as the game ended on a strikeout.Â
Daphne Pofek tossed the final three innings for CSUN, finishing with two strikeouts. Mackenzie Babbitt tied a career high with two stolen bases while Hooper and Taylor Nate also recorded a stolen base. The swipe moves Nate into a tie for eighth in program history with 34 for her career.Â
In the second game of the day, CSUN exploded for a season-high 10 hits in its win over Seattle U. Savannah Horvath and Taylor Glover each hit home runs in the victory and had multi-hit games.Â
Bell (1-2) had a strong outing to earn her first win of the season. She allowed one hit and two unearned runs in five innings of work, adding five strikeouts. Troost then slammed the door shut with two innings of no-hit relief work for her first save of the year. Â
Glover started things off with a lead off home run to start the game in the first inning. After a Redhawk error extended the inning, Horvath launched a three-run home run in the top of the third to give CSUN a 4-1 lead. She is now tied for eighth in program history with 24 career home runs.Â
Seattle pulled one run back in its half of the third, but the Matadors got it back in the top of the fifth. Hooper picked up her second RBI of the day with a run-scoring double that plated Haileigh Gonzalez.Â
Alexander added a double and Horvath recorded a stolen base to move into fourth place in program history with 39 in her career.Â
CSUN plays twice Saturday, facing Sacramento State at 10 a.m. and the host Pacific Tigers at 12:15 p.m. The Matadors close out their time in Stockton with a 10 a.m. game against Seattle on Sunday, Feb. 26.Â
