Matadors Sweep Saturday Twinbill in Stockton

CSUN Defeats Sac State 4-2 and Pacific 2-0
STOCKTON, Calif. --- Sophomore Taylor Troost tossed a one-hit shutout with a season-high six strikeouts to help lead the CSUN softball team (5-8) to a 2-0 victory over Pacific in the Matadors' second game Saturday at the Libby Matson Invitational. In the first game of the day, Daphne Pofek tossed a complete game with three strikeouts as CSUN upended Sac State 4-2. Offensively, Madison Fleming had two hits in the win over the Hornets, including a solo home run, and against the host Tigers, Fleming and Taylor Glover had RBI singles.Â
In the first game of the day, CSUN struck for two runs in the second and Fleming added an insurance run with her first home run of the season in the top of the seventh. Trailing 1-0, Karlie Habitz blasted a two-run single that scored Fleming and Jessica Alexander. In the fourth inning, Savannah Horvath was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sac bunt from Alexander, stole third base and then scored on an wild pitch to give CSUN a 3-1.Â
After Sacramento State cut the deficit to 3-2, Fleming roped a two-out solo shot in the top of the seventh to give CSUN some insurance. Pofek (2-2) tossed a quiet and quick seventh inning and scattered six hits over seven innings. She had three punch outs and walked one batter to earn the win.Â
In the second game of the day, Troost (2-2) tossed a gem for the Matadors. She allowed one hit, an infield single in the fourth inning. She fanned six batters and walked one to earn her second win of the season.Â
At the plate, Fleming came through once again with a key RBI single in the top of the fifth. With one out, Alexander drew a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt from Taylor Nate. Fleming then drove a single up the middle to break a scoreless tie.
In the sixth, Habitz started the inning with a double and Tara Kliebenstein came in to run for her. A sac bunt pushed her to third and Glover drove her home with a single through the right side. Â Troost sealed the victory with a quiet seventh inning.Â
The Matadors close out their time in Stockton, CA with a 10 a.m. contest against Seattle on Sunday, Feb. 26.Â
