Freshman now 4-2 on the season
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Freshman Emma Roenholt posted her team-leading fourth singles win of the season but the CSUN women's tennis team (2-5) lost 4-1 to San Jose State Saturday morning in a non-conference match at Matador Tennis Complex. Roenholt won in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-0, to improve to 4-2 on the season as the Matadors returned to action.Â
The Spartans scored an early 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point. Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei lost in their No. 1 match 6-3 and Kiryang Kim and Vivian Lin lost 6-2 in the second draw. Other singles results saw Kim fall in straight sets in the No. 1 draw against a nationally ranked opponent. Lin and Poei also suffered straight-set losses at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.Â
Skyla Alcon did not record a decision in the match, but she was close. With Roenholt, she led 5-4 in their doubles match and were about to play for the winning point when the match was called because SJSU had won the first two matches. In singles, she led 6-3 and 6-5 in her No. 3 draw before the match was again halted due to the final result having been established.Â
CSUN head coach Gary Victor liked the energy he saw from his team.Â
"We played well today against a very good opponent. As we continue to improve and get healthy, we look better and better. Today, we had a nice spark and looked liked the team we are capable of being this season," said Victor.Â
CSUN is right back to action with a Big West Conference match at Cal Poly on Sunday, Feb. 26. First serve is slated for 10 a.m. The Matadors' next home match is on Friday, Mar. 4 against New Mexico.Â
