Mickey Hsu, Emma Roenholt and Kristen Poei Win in Singles
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- Seniors Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei and freshman Emma Roenholt produced singles victories and the Matadors won the doubles point decisively as the CSUN women's tennis team (3-5, 2-2 Big West) defeated Cal Poly 4-3 Sunday morning. Hsu posted her first win of the season in the second draw to tie the contest, Poei won in straight sets at No. 6 and Roenholt won in three sets in the fourth draw to give the Matadors the edge over the host Mustangs. Â
As each team won three singles matches, the decisive point came in the doubles competition. Hsu and Poei, the program's all-time leaders in doubles victories, won 6-1 in the top draw for their first win of the season. In the third draw, Vivian Lin and Kiryang Kim also won 6-1 to give CSUN the early advantage.Â
In singles, Hsu won 7-5 and 6-4 in her No. 2 draw to improve to 1-1 on the season. It was nearly her second of the weekend; yesterday she was leading in her singles contest when the match was halted because the final result had been established.Â
Poei also evened her overall record (3-3) with her 6-1, 6-2 victory in the sixth draw. Roenholt then recorded her third-straight win and team-leading fifth of the season with a three-set victory in the third draw.Â
CSUN head coach Gary Victor was proud of the fight he saw from his squad.Â
"This was a very tough battled against a well-coached team. Today tested us both physically and mentally and we came through with some gritty performances to earn a conference victory on the road," said Victor.Â
The Matadors continue their 2017 season with a non-conference match at Cal State LA on Mar. 3 and then return home to host New Mexico on Mar. 4 with both matches slated for a 2 p.m. start.Â
